Bad news: Bear is still not eating and is still sick

Good news: For those who know WCF and Meowzi, I got Bear an app. with her vet today because we were unhappy with ours. I am wondering what I need to bring? I printed out his SS. Should I bring his insulin along in case they need to keep him? Is there anything else I need to bring?

I'm sorry that Bear is not eating or feeling well. The new vet should be able to get the records from the old one, but it might be better if you could get them before you go. If you've never had bloodwork, the vet records probably aren't as important IMHO. I hope your vet visit goes well and they figure out how to make Bear feel better.

If you're still around, you might want to bring some of his food so they don't feed him vet food.

Good luck!

Are you seeing Dr S or one of the others?

Two of the vets have seen our ss - frankly, I don't think they know what to do with it ;-) Copies of medical records, if you can get hold of them.

Are you bringing both in? When is your appt? I'm sorry they're still not feeling well :(

PS - I wouldn't leave him there unless it's critical. They're not staffed overnight, AFAIK, although someone will go in if there are meds to give etc.

Hey I just called and they said you have an appointment for tomorrow, they couldn't fit you in today. If Bear gets really sick, don't wait - go to your regular vet or to the ER over on the West Shore, ok? He's been sick for how many days now? Not eating is very worrisome.

WCF- We are seeing Dr. Wood tomorrow because Dr. Sarsfield had no appointments available but we told them that Dr. Sarsfield is who we will want to see in the future. We have the number for the emergency clinic... the options where go to Colonial Park Animal tonight or get the appointment for tomorrow and since he is doing better today... much more alert and responsive, drinking water, etc, we decided to wait. The records were faxed over tonight. When I called them, I told them Meowzi's name and said you recommended us and they said "Oh yes, I know just who you are talking about!" Appt is at 10:40. (THANK YOU!)

Both cats were sick for two days now. Mama is definitely feeling much better, she is her usual self- eating healthy, drinking, using LB, and playing.

Bear is still lethargic but responses to DBF's whistle and gets up and walks over... yesterday he would just look at him.

I wasn't sure if they would IV him because he hasn't been eating... should I bring the insulin?

good luck with the new vettybean. Bear might not want to tell the vettytechs that he is Meowzi's friend. I understand that she has quite a reputation there.

If the appointment is in the morning, then if they do need to keep him you could probably go home and get the insulin, right? Does Bear usually go lower or higher when he's stressed? Last time I had Jazzy at the vet I wished I had brought a meter and test strips, and if you think he'll eat treats then you can bring one or two of his treats. My vet's techs always try to give the kitties treats, and they're not low carb treats. I give them a piece of freeze dried chicken to offer her (but she won't eat them at the vet).

Did they groan too, as they said that? As Libby says, Meowzi does have quite a reputation there (although she's mellowed somewhat now) and so does her pesky mommy

Dr Wood's seen the ss before, so it won't be his first time. He and I had a disagreement over pain management - so I always ask for Dr Sarsfield now, unless it's an emergency. If Leslie S the tech is there, you can tell her Meowzi & mommy say hi - if it's another vettytech, you may want to take Libby's advice and not mention that Bear is Meowzi's friend ;-)

Sounds like Mama is over it; I hope Bear gets over it soon too. Could they have gotten into any houseplant? Has anything new been used at home - detergents, flea meds, etc? Do they go outside on any grass?

I wouldn't, because I don't trust them to handle it correctly, i.e. not roll it, not draw and shoot back into the vial. They taught me to roll it when we first learned (although that was back in 2006). Does he seem that sick that they'll keep him? I just don't like the thought of him being kept there for the weekend - if he's home and takes a turn for the worse at home, you'll be able to catch it and get him attention quicker.

Do you mean IV fluids? Most likely they'll give him SQ fluids, if he's dehydrated.

Let me know if you need any yummy treats to entice him to eat - we have freeze-dried chicken, bonito flakes, and crunchy turkey here. Oh and also ask if probiotics could help. You can buy Culturelle from any pharmacy, or just give him some plain yoghurt. I also found a box of FortiFlora in Meowzi's fridge that has a use-by date of Dec 2009 ohmygod_smile - ask Dr W if he thinks that's still ok to use. It's been in the fridge the whole time, and sealed in little sachets, if you want it - there's no way we're going to finish them before the end of this year. Most kitties seem to think it's yummy sprinkled on food.

We don't really give Bear treats... as a former fatcat he thinks getting food is a treat in itself. I may have to take you up though if he is still ignoring his food. I am poaching some chicken tonight, hopefully he will want that.

I am unfamiliar with SQ fluids... I thought they give an IV if he is dehydrated. What are SQ fluids? I will take your advice and ask them not to keep him if they try to do that. Did I mention THANK YOU for the recommendation?

Oh and they way the girl said "Oooooh, I know exactly who you are talking about," when I mentioned Meowzi's name? I just had to giggle!!!

same fluids, but given subcutaneously, under skin (usually at scruff area) vs intravenously into vein. we give meowzi SQ fluids daily because of her kidney disease.

if they want to keep him, ask how they're monitoring and who will be there and when, and then tell them you're not comfortable b/c it's not staffed 24/7, unlike an ER, and you can better monitor at home. esp with a diabetic, since you must make sure he eats after his shots and that he doesn't hypo.

yes you did :) you're welcome! don't expect too much from them re: FD, though, b/c i think this board is way better at managing FD than they are. leslie is the only one who has had a sugarcat, she knows about testing etc.

btw if they do bloodwork, if they don't think it's urgent, i prefer that it be sent out to antech instead of done in-house. i think at CPAC they do in-house? outside labs are better.

Meowzi shared those treats with my kitties and the bonito flakes are very, um, fragrant, which can really help with a kitty's appetite (unless, maybe, if they are nauseous). After bringing them home in my purse, KB was caught with his head in there looking for who knows what. The other snacks disappeared faster but I am hoarding the flakes and only giving them once in a while in case I really need to use them some time.

I sure hope whatever he has passes quickly.

He was definitely nauseous yesterday.. he would drink a few sips of water then heave.
