I really could use my FDMB friends advice with Baxter.

Here is what is going on with Mr. Baxter:
-Feb 2 Baxter was at the vet for symotoms of a UTI. Vet gave Claramox 2x daily.
-Lab Results No Ketones (I have been testing at home all negative), no crystals, Gravity 1025, normal white blood cells, increased red blood cells.
-No threwing up after Claramox.
-No signs of straining to uranite.
-BG PS has been in 300's which is probably related to UTI.

Today:
8:00am-BG 312 ate, admin Claramox. Ate all his food. Gave 1.0 Prozinc.
9:30-Straining during BM. Nothing.
9:45-Trying again...hard round piece.
10:00-Acting like he needs to BM. Nothing.
Throws up all food.
10:30-fed 1/2 can food. Mixed with Miralax. Ate all of it.
11:00-Threws up again. All of the food I fed @ 10:30. Tested BG 309

What do I do?
What should I be thinking? Any ideas?
If this is something I could take care of at home then that would be great. He was just at the vet last week for $216. Baxter health is #1 to me.

Baxters SS is updated.
Thank you,
Jenn & Baxter

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

If he has constipation, he may be obstructed. I believe this could require a vet visit.

Generally speaking, if you see evidence of constipation/obstruction, you don't want to push from the incoming end, as it will turn right around and come back up. and that is what seems to have happend.

If he has a blockage, he may need some irrigation, softening agents inserted, and/or an enema to clear him out.

If you feel up to it, and the vet will tell you/provide you what to use, you may attempt giving an enema at home.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

As time passes....he is contipated. He keeps hunching his back like he needs to go. He looks at me & meows. This is his normal nap time & he is up.
I have called the vet....still waiting to hear back. I am about to take him to a closer vet. Like the one right on the corner from me.

I can give it to him. I seriously doubt the vet will give me the stuff. He always wants to run this test & that test.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Glad you are going to the vet, this is Merlyn symptoms all over. Merlyn had been straining so long that by the time I got home from work he was bleeding because he couldnt poop. That was the night he was DXed with his HCM. Muscle relaxants and an enema or manual clean out. Miralax will help soften stool forming now but will not soften already hard blocked stool. You will probably need to give him miralax regularly.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Poor Baxter! :( Me and Curt are hoping he is able to poop soon and feels better!!

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please~Update

We are back from the vet. A manual clean out is what it was. :o My heart sunk when the vet started...Baxter was crying so loud. I started to cry because I knew he was in so much pain. I never heard him be that loud.
Hopefully, this will help. I am going to start the Miralax regularly. The vet didn't suggest it, but I think it's a good idea. Baxter really had me scared today. I don't want to be at this point with him again. It's not fun for either of us.

Now to figure out why his BG is so high lately.

Thanks everyone,
Jenn & Baxter

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

His bg will start dropping again tomorrow. It was stress from all the straining and vet. Poor guy. Racci has been going through the same thing. Was at the vet yesterday and was in the 300's. Was down to 234 by am & am about to test now. She has an anal gland infection constipating her but keeping her on the miralax. Still constipated!

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. They really mean alot to me.

@Melanie I remember your thread about constipation & Dr.lisa suggestions. I did it, but wasn't doing it everyday because he seem good, then BAM this happened. I'm going to start giving it to him regularly. I can't be where I was today with him. It wasn't a good day here. Very heartbreaking.
I hope his high numbers are from constipation.
I hope Racci feels better soon! cat_pet_icon

Again thank you everyone.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

((((jenn)))) that sounds awful - traumatic for both of you. i'm glad you've got a new plan and hopefully he won't have to go through that again. you're such a good bean - he's lucky to have you!

are you also adding water to his food? that helps a lot - you can make it really soupy and the water helps keep them from getting constipated too.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Hi Jenn,

I'm sorry poor Baxter had to go through that. It's no fun but was probably harder on you hearing it. I'm hoping I don't have to bring Racci back for that too. She was so stressed the other day at the vet that she hasn't pooped since even though I have given more Miralax than usual! I'm mixing it in a little cup with a syringe to get just 3 syringes full of water to mix it and then getting it in her that way 2x a day trying to get her to go and am going to call the vet back when she gets off surgery at 3. Racci's bg went up again this morning too. I'm going to make a separate post to get some advice so don't want to write it all out here but it's so frustrating!

I do hope Baxter starts getting back to normal again now and yes I would definitely give him the miralax every day. My vet seconded what Lisa said exactly, not that I doubted her, but just wanted you to know.

Melanie

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

I have been adding about 3oz of warm water to his food early on. It's soupy & he likes to lick it.
Now I mix the Miralax in with that water.
His BG hasn't gone down just yet. We were in the 300s again this morning. I hope just a little more time it will drop. I would say that vet visit was more than stressful.

I really hope Racci gets better very soon! Hugs to the pretty girl.

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Racci is still higher than normal too. Those poor babies get so stressed out. What Racci had was similar to Baxter's ordeal. Had to clean out her anal gland and shave her, get a shot, etc, plus she's a terrible traveler and cried the whole way there. I wish it wasn't so hard on them. I've often thought of using those Vets on Wheels but never knew anyone who did to get a recommendation from.

Hugs to your handsome boy too. I hope he gets over it quickly.

Melanie

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

I'm so glad you took him to the vet!

Re: Baxter~What is going on? Advice Please.

Me too, it sounds like it was a terrible ordeal but surely Baxter will start feeling better soon... it must be a relief to be "clear" again for a start. Looking forward to seeing a lower BG. Keep us posted.

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/9

Baxter BG really hasn't gone done much.
AMPS still in the 300's. I caught him tonight going up & shot @ +10. I don't know could be dangerous?
He hasn't gone poo since tues. with vet assistance. Tomorrow we might be back at the vet. Crossing my fingers we won't be. I am hoping the Miralax will kick in & kick it out.... :o

Thank you everyone for all the advice & words of support.

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/9

Are you giving Miralax 2x a day and how much? Did the vet give you anything for his soreness on his butt? Can he lick it or is he too fat to reach? The reason I ask is that I put a tiny bit of vaseline on the rim of Racci's butt and it makes her feel better when she's irritated but you don't want to do it if he's going to lick it off or get it inside him. The vet gave me a puff powder for her this time that's medicated that she likes. She can't lick herself though so we don't have to worry about it going in her mouth.

What is it with all the constipation lately? I've never seen so many cats all constipated at once! I wonder if it's some kind of virus or if it's just from switching food and so many are switching over right now and their systems are having a hard time getting adjusted?

I hate to even think it but, I wouldn't let him go longer than 3 days. If he hasn't gone by the 3rd morning, I'd bring him back to the vet. He may still have something in there or a reason for the blockage. Poor Baxter.

That's the same thing Racci did! I think it's because they're sore from the vet. That's why I decided to give her the miralax by syringe so I ccould tell that she got it all at once, and it worked. I just gave her the bowl of water and food soaked with water right after the miralax on the ottoman while we sat together getting ready to test. There was a nice big poop waiting for me this morning when I woke up.

She was so proud of herself! Remember how I told you how she always calls me to see it? Well I was sleeping so she tried to tell my husband but he's just totally not with it and thought she wanted food so she gave up and laid down until I woke up and he couldn't figure out what he did wrong. As soon as I woke up she ran to the bathroom and called me to her box to show me. :-D I had to explain to him so he'd know next time. Her numbers were up again today when they should have been down though, at +6! She'll probably be low at shot time!

Sorry, I wrote this and then got caught up cleaning and powdering Racci and forgot to send it.

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/9

HE FINALLY WENT! :RAHCAT

Now to figure out why his AMPS was 428. Doing a curve today.

We have had a rough week since being DX in Nov.

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/9

I know what you mean. Anything yet? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending Baxter poo thoughts! Come on Baxter, you can do it!

Might ease your mind a little though to know I spoke to my vet today and she said it's not unusual when they have a procedure on their anus and to keep giving miralax & if not eating the wet food to give whatever they want to eat, even the dry until they feel better and just sprinkle the miralax on the dry if they eat that better. She said the important thing is to get them over the hump and even if their #'s raise, you can get them bakc on track later when they feel good. You might try that if he's a dry food addict and not eating because he wants comfort food. That said, since he did have one blockage, you want to be careful and not wait too long. I still think you should only give it 3 days of no poop. Did you give him a good dose of miralax last night and another this morning?

Good luck! I'll be thinking of you two. Keep me posted.
Melanie

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/10

Melanie, HE WENT! :RAHCAT last night some & a little this morning.
Nope no dry for him. It's the devil  he eats his canned food. Although, i am considering changing his food. The Sophi cat doesn't have much fiber. I been researching the foods again...driving myself crazy @-)

His BG is really high. Doing a curve today. The vet is doing a follow up call later today. So I want to have lots of info for his file.

Thank you so much for keeping us in your thoughts. You guys are so sweet. I will tell him his friends are thinking of him. ;-)

Re: Baxter~What is going on?~Update 2/10

Hip Hip Hooray!!!!!! Way to go, Baxter! I knew he could do it. I'm so glad.

I Know what you mean about that researching! I'm doing the same though every other wet food I've tried, she's turned her nose up at. Now she decided she won't eat it again! At least she pooped though! :YMSIGH: Look at her crazy #'s!!!!! confused_cat

I don't know what to do with her. When I spoke to the vet, she said all her tests came back great. Her fructosamine was in the normal range, other than showing that she's fighting off the mild infection we know she has, everything is normal! I tested ketones last night and today with all these weird readings and she's the perfect normal color. She ate a wet breakfast or a little of it at any rate, mostly liquid and left the rest so per the vet, I gave her a more than usual of the dry as her treat for her tests so she would at least have solids in her and something to poop! I must have tried every wet food there is since she got this!!!!!!!

What is Sophi cat? I never saw that one. Where do you get it?

Melanie

I'm just reading this now. Poor Baxter having to have that manual cleaning. Poor you too. I would have cried also.

I'm so glad he's feeling better and pooping. We have poop issues over here but they are the opposite variety....still just as frustrating though.
