Basil is just home from the vet. He hasn't eaten since midnight and I tested his glucose. It is 243. He is clearly starving.

The vet's office gave us boilerplate instructions not to feed him until nealry 3 hours from now. I gave him a little broth from some canned chicken and a taste of chicken. Should I give him a little more? I don'w ant him to gorge and vomit, so I mean a little bit. Will that help?

Hi, I'm glad Basil is home. When Maggie had her dental, I don't remember having to hold food for her for three hours. Im sorry but I missed your condo earlier. What was the reason for no food for three hours? Do you have any baby food? I'd call the Vet and ask if you could give a little to hold him.

Re: Basil: Home from Dental: 243 Feed??

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the reply!

I forgot to link to my past condo. Sorry.

He had a dental at 9 this morning. It's the post-anesthesia thing that makes them say no feeding. I couldn't stand it so I gave him two pieces of chicken (white meat from a can I keep for sick animals) about 1/2 an inch or so cubed mashed with some broth. He seems a little happier. If that stays for half an hour, I will give him more.

That sounds good with the chicken & broth. Poor Basil has to be starving as that's a long time without food. I hope Basil keeps the food down and glad he seems happier with something in his tummy. Sending some feel better vines.

Re: Basil: Home from Dental: 243 Feed??

I'd try a teaspoon of food at a time. The anesthesia slows the GI track which is why you don't want to feed too much at a time.

Did Basil have any extractions?

Well, I fed him slowly over the course of three hours. He is still hanging out at his food dish! But I want to test him after 3 hours of no food which will be 11pm here (NY time). I slipped him a little pro-biotic to anticipate the effect of the Clavamox. NOT looking forward to that since the vet gave us liquid! I don't know why because Basil is very easy to give a pill to.

Hooray! Basil ate several small meals between 5pm and 8pm. He started out at 243 at 5pm and was 87 at 11pm.

Whew!

PS, Sienne, I forgot to add that yes, he lost three teeth. Now he has 24.

PLEASE check with the vet as to what the ingredients in the antibiotic are. A lot of the liquids are in a sugar syrup base. (Or, stick your finger in it and taste the stuff!) Somehow, vets seem to space on the fact that your cat is diabetic and give liquid meds that are in a syrup base.

Did the vet give you pain meds?

Nice recovery on those numbers!!!

Yes, we do have pain medication although the vet thought we would be unlikely to need it.

I don't think liquid clavamox has sugar but I will check tomorrow. It is a powder that is reconstituted with water. Can 't taste it since my husband and I are both allergic. I am sure it is sweet but do not know if the sweetener is artificial.

I think Basil goes to the front of the class with that pretty 87. Let's hope he looks as good tomorrow morning.

Great news for Basil. If he had teeth extracted, he should definitely have pain meds on board. I'm also surprised they didn't give clindamycin...it's usually a better choice for extractions.
