I'm having a problem finding the spread sheet to post for Barts curve could someone help me. He is on lantus and I believe he needs to go from 1.5 units to 2 units. I won't do this until I'm sure his numbers are in the 300's. Thanks

hi debby!

looks like you've been a member for a while - are you familiar with the Tight Regulation Protocol? it's got a great success rate for helping cats get regulated and many go off of insulin by following the protocol.

here's the link for it: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1581

it's located at the top of the Lantus Support group page and along with a few other really important threads is marked with a yellow star on the left side of the page.

people here would be happy to answer questions and help you learn the ropes.

btw, with lantus, dosing decisions get made by the lowest BG number you get in each cycle, not by the high numbers. we try to get spot checks in to see that lower number, and if you have to adjust the dose, only do it by .25units. a tiny change in insulin can make a huge change in the cat.

glad to have you here! feel free to ask questions! you can usually get an answer within a half hour or so.

Thanks to everyones response this is so frustrating at times. I'm trying to get Bart regulated without having to go to the vet every couple of weeks like they would like me to. Having problems getting the template for Barts spread sheet. Until I can get it here are his numbers from Thursdays curve which I did every 3 hours.
3am 386
6am 332
9am 362
12pm 374
3pm 365
I also try to test him after 6 hours in between shots yesterday he was 347, The lowest he has ever gotten is 263 and that was his first test in the morning before breakfast. I know that I need to increase him to 2 units but am scared doing this. He has gained some weight back since I increased it to 1.5 which was 2 weeks ago. So any advice you can have for me would be greatly appreciated.

If the link to the spreadsheet template isn't working, try this link as an alternative. Google has been weird, lately.

If you are generally seeing tests that are above 200 and you are getting at least one test during each cycle (i.e., there are 2 cycles per day), it would be fine to increase the dose. However, I'd encourage you to post here on a regular basis. We've all been scared when we see lower numbers -- even though we know that getting our cats into lower numbers is a good thing. There's a great deal of support here and people will help to allay your fears and walk you through situations where you're uncomfortable. Always remember that if you are testing, you are in control and can steer the numbers. You just need to have strips and high carb food as a part of your arsenal.

Good Morning Bart stays in the 300's once he was 295 for his first testing of the day. I did increase just a little this morning only just below the 1 and 1/2 unit. I won't beable to increase more until next weekend when I can be home all day. I will continue to check him everyday after 6 hours to see where he is at. Thank you for helping me through this.

Hello Do lou and I never thought that Bart would be a sugarcat his brother is the one I have to keep sweets from he has the sweet tooth.

Binks is a total Contraband Kitty...

he'll eat anything he can...including spaghettios, artichoke hearts, and gummi bears.
but i believe he became diabetic due to the dry kibble i fed him for the majority of his life :YMSIGH:
We just didn't know any better...

I've had Bart and Rufus since they were 5 weeks old and fed them purinia one up until a few months ago. I didn't realize that dry food had so many carbs. Three years ago Rufus developed crystals and the vet wanted him on a speical diet and sold me a bag of prescription food. Which ran me about 17.00 for a 3lb bag. Well he didn't like it so I compared the ingredients of that one to purinia urinary track food and they were the same. Which purinia cost 7.00 for a 5 lb bag. I know that vets make their money on this and it makes me angry that they take advantage of their customors like that.
Thinking about a cat eatting gummy bears make me laugh thinking of how hard they can be to chew. I have to keep Rufus away when I make rum balls once I put the rum in the chocolate cookie he come running.
