Bandit's Numbers Go Down Without Insulin - too low?

Two weeks ago Bandit was diagnosed with DKA and diabetes, apparently steriod induced after receiving steriods for asthma. Three days in the hospital he was ketone free and came home (a Friday). We started insulin injections , always testing of course. At first his numbers were very high, over 500. They slowly came down and by Thursday they were low enough that we stopped giving insulin. However, his numbers are continuing to drop and I'm getting concerned.

First day w/o insulin: 169
2nd day: 137
3rd Day: 118
4th Day: 108
5th Day: 102
Today: 97

Am I being concerned for nothing? Is it possible he could go too low without insulin? Bandit is my second cat with diabetes, but we never had this problem with Snowy, our first diabetic cat.

One thing I will say is how important testing is. If we had not been testing, we would have continued giving him insulin and I'm afraid we would have lost him for sure.

Thanks again for all your help and advice.

Thanks so much for the reassurance. I think his diabetes is diirectly related to the steroids, which is making me very wary of using steriods for my cats in the future. I will only use steriods now if there is a life threatening situation.

Maui's diabetes was steroid induced (as well as dry food) too. Yes, oral, injectionable steroids certainly can mess with BG's. Inhaled steroids (like Flovent) however, don't mess with BG's. So if your cat has asthma and needs an inhaler, don't worry about giving it, it's ok.
