Good Question and I would like to know as well, but sorry, do not know.

It does help with the urine smell-that is my biggest problem. If I mix too much of it into the clumoing litter, it sometimes. Softens up the clumps so they fall apart. If I have to chose between urine smell or no clumping action, then I can live without the clumps! :-)

"Baking Powder and Baking Soda. Baking soda and baking powder are both leavening agents. A leavening agent is a common ingredient in baked goods that produces a gas causing batter and dough to rise. Baking soda is simply sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder actually consists of baking soda and an acid, usually cream of tartar, calcium acid phosphate, sodium aluminum sulfate or a mixture of the three. Ingestion of large amounts of baking soda or baking powder can lead to electrolyte abnormalities (low potassium, low calcium and/or high sodium), congestive heart failure or muscle spasms. "

Who even mentioned baking powder? A cat (or a person for that matter) would have to ingest a large quantity of baking soda for it to be harmful. A cat could also get sick from ingesting clay or pine litter. Baking soda is a lot safer than some of the other scent controlling ingredients they put in cat litter.

I have used baking soda and litter additives that have baking soda (more expensive than plain).

A sprinkle a day is less likely to cause clumps to break up than if you add a lot at one time.

The "litter additives" are packaged in boxes with shaker tops which is nice -- helps the product to sift out over the litter instead of coming out in lumps.
