I am so confused with all this new diagnosis diabetes...we are up to 3 units with no improvement how high can they go? I use friskies wet food the dr wanted me to buy from them or pet store but the cheapest is $1.50 a can I have 9 fur babies I can't swing that!!! I am so upset. I take him to the vets for the glucose test which is $100 every 2 weeks. Is it easy to do it yourself I am so depressed trying to do the best for my boy. Any help appreciated

Debra,
It is surprisingly easy to test at home. I was amazed myself. Did your vet ever suggest home testing, or just poo-poo the idea all together?

Hasn't suggested at all they are making a fortune I think I can do it I've watched the videos do you do it everyday I poke him with the insulin I don't want to poke him more (mommy cat). He is 12 pounds I use friskies wet how long does the insulin usually take to become effective?

I've been testing Fred from the get go (3 months)... he lets me test him in his sleep, now. There are tons of helpful links on this site and on you tube. I was nervous the first few times. I think it is mandatory to home test. It's a life saver!

Debra,
I have only been at this for a little over three weeks. Shiloh was at 421 in the vet's office, but while doing it at home, I have several in the 300's, a LOT of 200's , and the last week or so plenty of 100's. Each cat is different as to how they respond.

I "poke" Shiloh on the average of 5 times a day. Much more on the weekends. At the very least, before each shot. You want to make sure that they are high enough to need a shot.

I'm know there are lots more on here that are way more experienced than am. I'm sure they will respond soon.

To a certain extent, but you need to know Bailey's pattern first as to how he reacts to the insulin. The type of insulin is also very important as to how to adjust. @BJM You can advise more than I can?

The Friskies Pates, and the Friskies Special Diet pates are generally low carb (not Tasty treasures, not Mixed Grill). Anything else may not be low carb.

Hi Debra, welcome. First of all, take a couple deep, calming breaths, it's important. Then, the other really important thing is to begin home testing, as soon as you can. I started with the AlphaTrak2, which is animal specific, I still use it as I could never quite "get" the human meter stuff into my head. But I did start using the Freestyle Lite strips as they cost about 1/3 to 1/2 what AT2 strips cost and work virtually the same. They're made by the same company and I did quite a few comparisons, almost always within a few points. It just simplified and already stressful and confusing situation.

The insulin should only be increased by .25 to .50 units every days as it takes time for the kitty's body to learn how to use the insulin.

A much more affordable and very low carb food choice would be Evo brand, I order it from chewy.com. If you spend $49 it's free shipping.
