Bailey Keeps Loosing Weight

As you can see Bailey is continuing to loose weight. His BGs are no worse than always, but that means large swings in AM and PM PSs, like some times PSs in the 300-400s and other below 100. He is/was on Budesonide, 1.5 mg SID. He is hyperthyroid but it is under control with a t$of 2.3 last time. His other blood values are good as is his USG. This evening i stopped his Budesonide and started prednisolone 5 mg BID. It can't really make his BGs any worse. As you would expect with the weight loss, he looks very skinny. He is in good spirits though, just tired looking. He is about 17. I feel so sad about his condition.

Is appetite is OK and I have been syringe feeding his if necessary. He does eat some dry too at the end of feeding and during the day since dry food is better than none. Recently though he has has a good appetite and will finish off a whole 5.5 OZ can of 9-Lives. He used to vomit a little be that is under control with about 2.5 mg famotidine BID.

Sorry, no real advice. What does the vet say?

Can Bailey eat an entire can at one sitting?

The only think I can suggest is to maybe try something with more calories, but maybe someone with experience will come along and have better advice.

How about using kitten food for higher caloric content. My first thought would be to use A/D as his wet food and kitten chow for his dry. Have you thought about trying CliniCare as a supplement?

My wishes for Bailey to feel better.

BTW: How is Twiggie doing? I think of her often.

Larry, can you get an ultrasound done?

And has a Free T4 been run, just to make sure that he really is controlled, and you're not getting false low readings from Sick Euthyroid?

Bailey's T4 has been decreasing with increasing his dose. His last T4 was 2.3, which is about where you want it when being treated for hyperthyroidism. If T4 was low then a fT4 wold be in order. From Idexx's T4 rage:

Interpretive ranges:
<0.5 subnormal
0.5-4.7 normal
2.3-4.7 grey zone in old or symptomatic cats
>4.7 consistent with hyperthyroidism

Cats with subnormal T4 values are almost exclusively euthyroid sick or
overtreated for their hyperthyroidism. Older cats with consistent
clinical signs and T4 values in the grey zone may have early
hyperthyroidism or a concurrent non-thyroidal illness. Hyperthyroidism
may be confirmed in these cats by adding on a free T4 or by performing
a T3 suppression test. Following treatment with methimazole, T4 values
will generally fall within the lower end of the reference range
(0.5 - 2.3).
 
When Tucker was losing weight without explanation it turned out to be his potassium. Have you checked electrolytes?

Tucker went from 17.6 pounds down to 13-something, can't remember the exact number. He started the weight loss in November 2009, it wasn't until March 2010 that we learned about the hypokalemia. His current weight is 12.2, much too thin, but still handsome ;-)
 
no advice, just wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through this and I will send positive thoughts and prayers your way ...
