    Badger is now being prepped for surgery to remove (enucleate) his left eye. He has glaucoma in that eye and is permanently blind in that eye. He also has freckles in the iris of both eyes which indicate possible melanoma which can metastasis to other parts of the body. The freckles in the removed eye are going to be biopsied to see if it is cancer. I will post a photo of his eye socket when he comes back home today. Below is photo I took the other day. You can see the difference between the L and R eyes.

    Thanks for posting the photos. It’s very helpful (and educational) to see what the eye looks like.

    I hope surgery went well. Please post a follow up.

    Badger looks like my late kitty Guy, he had the same procedure for glaucoma, that we found out was driven by cancer. Guy, felt much better in a couple of days after the surgery because he did not have all that pressure. Sadly, I lost him to something else later that year. Best wishes, easy recovery and a long life ahead for Badger.

    Update: WHen Badger came home after surgery I got depressed. It seemed that he could barely see. One complication of enucleation is that the optic nerve for the good ey can be damaged resulting in blindness is the unremoved eye. Herem is what Badger looked like right after he came home.

    Here is what he looked like yesterday

    The tabby marking mask the removed eye.

    No the bad new, Friday the biopsy results came back and the freckles is diffuse iris melanoma. It is likely that the glaucoma was caused by the melanoma and the melanoma has metastasized to outside the eye.

    One of my kitty's in 2018 had the same procedure, looked the same and also had cancer. After a few days he felt so much better, because the glaucoma is very painful. He did not seem to notice the lost of the eye, because he probably could not see out of it and was glad to get rid of the pain. I lost him in 2018 not because of any thing that had to do with his eye but something else.

    So sorry. Max had a freckle that one vet commented on at age 12 but nobody else did. He never appeared to have cancer when he passed at 19. I hope Badger’s cancer is now cured by the surgery. :bighug:

    I don't know what type cancer, the lab messed up and I never found out. I took him to a specialty hospital in Indy and took him through the emergency room, so they kept him over night and the next day the eye doctor saw him. I don't remember what she said she did, but she told me what he had and that she thought it was driven by cancer, that it was very painful and that he could not see out of his eye. She said if it was normal glaucoma he would have had it in both eyes. The doctor wanted to take his eye out that day, but I wanted to try him on the meds to see if it could help. I went to Indy and brought him home, got the meds, they were very expensive, but they did not help. His vet here in the town where I live took his eye out, she said she really cleaned it out and could not see the signs of anything in where his eye had been. He seemed fine for several months, then he came down with something else and I lost him. Hopefully, your guy will have some time left.

    How is your kitty feeling, is he eating, wanting attention and acting normal. Hopefully, he has a speedy recovery, and I hope you do too. When one of my cats are having problems, I am very upset and really worry about them and I can tell you do too.

    The first couple of days were not good. He did not jump up on bathroom counter to eat. I had to lift him up (my Dulce ears on the bathroom floor). They he acted normally. His BGs are finally coming down. Right after his BGs were high. Like this was first time he reached a PS of over 400. Normally it is in the 100"s. I was scared to increase dose from his normal about 0.6 units since I expected BG to go down with time.

    My kitty who had his eye removed was not diabetic, so no BG with him. Buddy who is my diabetic kitty I have always had BG problems, because of his pancreatitis. Guy, my kitty who lost his eye felt bad for a few days and then he started perking up, I know he felt better. He had problems with his eye for a while and the things his vet tried did not work, so she had me take him to a specialist. I could not get an appt with the specialist for several days, so his vet had me take him through the ER then the specialist would have to see him the next day. When this vet saw him she knew right away what his problem was, I wish we had found it sooner because he was in pain. After a few days he perked up and was doing fine for several months and then another problem knocked him down. It is so hard when our kitty's are sick, I pretty much get sick myself. Did your vet give you a prognosis. Did your regular vet find this problem.

    Larry,
    Tons of love out to you and Badger. One eye kitties and pups are dear to my heart, since I had the same procedure done for my cocker spaniel about twenty years ago, due to glaucoma. I spent thousands on cryosurgery and meds beforehand. One eye wasn't nearly as bad, but she finally lost sight in the remaining eye, but never went completely blind. I pray Badger feels better very soon.

    He's still beautiful:bighug::cat::bighug:
