bad reaction to clavamax?

Oscar was doing very badly last week and although I thought the end had come, the vet found a UTI and prescribed clavamax. He has not done well on it - eating very little (I had to syringe feed, but couldn't get much into him), sleeping all day, wobbly with extremely weak back legs, only walking a few steps before laying down, incontinent of urine, constipated....

She said she wanted to see how he would do after the weekend.

No change to maybe a little more alert but will not leave his box for more than a moment.

I have a recheck scheduled for tonight. Perhaps this is the end - it feels like that to me - but perhaps she will try a different antibiotic.

So, my question - anyone have similar bad experience with clavamax which then responded to a switch? If yes, do you know the name of the effective antibiotic?

General info: 18 year old cat, diabetic but OTJ since 2009, renal disease since Feb, dementia

I have only really heard of vomiting and inappetance as a side effect. However one in a while one can be allergic to an antibiotic. I would go for Baytril or Zeniquin.
 
clavamox is a combo ab - that contains amoxicillin. it is possible that your cat can be allergic to amoxicilin and therefore, may want to avoid all drugs that contain it - Maui has this issue.

The vet decided to finish the course of clavamax (he only had one pill left) and prescribed an appetite stimulant mitrazapine.

Oscar has lost half a pound since starting the clavamax 7 days ago! I gave him the first mitrazapine last night but he seems the same as ever today.

Now, we wait and see.... if he doesn't improve soon, we will have to let him go.

Also, I've never seen clavamox in pill form, but that got me wondering. Were you following up with a syringe of water after pilling? It can cause throat problems and other issues in cats if pills are not followed with water and/or food to help wash it down, which might be why he's having a hard time eating.
 
No, I didn't do that. The vet did not mention. However, I did coat the pill with butter and he was drinking water regularly on his own.

If he has throat problems, is it permanent? I hate the idea I did this to him. :sad:
 
Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. You might try some FortiFlora - good bacteria - to replenish what the antibiotic took out. Its in an animal digest base and many cats find it quite tasty. It'll be less expensive online, although your vet may have it at the office. Or you might try a teaspoon of plaim yogurt with active lactobacillus cultures in it.

He does get yogurt usually. I will add some to his next syringe feed. He HATES syringe feeding. Poor boy.
 
My diabetic cat Tony was put on Clavamax for a tooth infection. I noticed cat vomit daily but having multiple cats, I didn't know who was the one getting sick. After a few days of this, still not knowing, I came home to some noise in the other room. Here Tony was having a seizure. First one EVER and hopefully last one EVER. Here it was him getting sick from the Clavamax and with no food in him with the insulin he had a seizure. He was taken off that med permanently. Never had a problem since. I pray your cat gets better.
