Hi All
First of all can I say thank you all so much for helping me out when my cat Biscuit was diagnosed with Diabetes back in 2007, the information and knowledge for the UK people was irreplaceable.
You will all be happy to know that Biscuit is still going strong, she is now 18.5 years old, we've had our ups and downs with the Diabetes but I cannot stress more that monitoring the blood glucose level is a must to keep you cat healthy and alive. I've got so use to reading my cat now that I can tell if she's too high or too low with her glucose, there are days when I'm more a nurse than an owner but I would do anything for her.
She has now been put onto K/d prescription diet for kidney issues as she was being sick a lot, I had major problems regulating her insulin with this food but eventually found a balance. Now you read that I had the problems.....that's because I did not ask the vet, I just dealt with the insulin levels myself as the vet was telling me to give her 4 units when she only need 2 units. Also I started to notice that her insulin usage changed and that monitoring was a must as you could be giving your cat too much or too little insulin. Every time I've gone to the vet they are always saying are you giving her 3 units and I have to say no she is now either up or down from that level, if I had continued giving the level advised by the vet Biscuit wouldn't be here now.
So there's a small warning to all newbie's to Diabetes........monitor your cat's glucose level and don't be scared to up or down the units but be careful only change the dose by a very small amount until you reach the right level.
Biscuit is now mostly blind and is hard of hearing as well as a bit stiff when walking but I never thought she'd be still here after she was diagnosed.
I have heard of people who have not done their research into Diabetes and lost their cat to hypo....it's a really shame that people don't realise that you can still get many years from your cat if you just read up and monitor.
Anyway sorry for ranting on and on, I just wanted to let you all know that even though I've not been here I have managed to keep Biscuit well which was down to the advice and information from this site.
Many Many thanks
Julie
