Hey all, my boy has been in remission a bit over a year now and now I need help. He has been diet regulated on YAZ dry and tiki cat wet. I had run out of the YAZ and forgot to order it in time so I bought some tiki cat dry. The YAZ wont be in till later this week. I was out of state for 3 days this weekend and had someone feeding him for me. I came home sunday night and he had diarrhea and the litterbox was overflowing. He no longer had diarrhea last night but yesterday and today his blood sugar has been reading in the 290 range. I have not given him any dry food since getting home sunday night. Trying to see if I can get his sugar down with just wet food. How long would you wait before just resorting to insulin injections again?

If you stick with wet food only and the YAZ will be here within a week, I would not restart insulin, I would just wait. If after getting back to his normal diet for about a week, if the diarrhea stays gone and his stress level lowers back to normal but the numbers are still up, I would get blood work and urinalysis first to make sure there's no infection brewing before I'd restart insulin though. Our first diabetic went in and out of remission 4 or 5 times, and this is how we handled it -- get everything to normal, get checked for infections, and start insulin as a last result.

Do keep home testing though, because he could go back into remission again and you'd need to catch it to prevent a hypo episode if his body stops requiring the insulin you are giving..

If they do find an infection...not sure if I'd wait until the course of antibiotics is finished or not. I probably would, but you can check back in and get opinions if that's the case.

Just my two cents, others can feel free to chime in with theirs.
