Yesterday morning baby showed remarkable resilience as she climbed on her foot high perch. I called the vet to cancel her echo cardiogram as I was concerned it may make her worse. Not getting him on the phone I decided to go. Two vets had said to do this as it was necessary before they would prescribe something for her. When I got there I insisted on staying with her through all testing and I did comfort her. At the same time I was bothered by their lack of gentleness I though should be applied. I tried to diffuse the situation and making her more comfortable.

When I got her home and let her out of the carrier she fell on her side finding it difficult to move. I got a sick, numb feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I stayed with her through most of the night expecting her to rally in her usual way. To my horror this morning I woke to find her gasping for breath and not moving. It was evident that this was what I had feared most.

Her usual vet said to take her to an emergency hospital an hour north of here as they were too busy to euthanize her. I found a local vet compassionate enough to check her. he announced she was in congestive hear failure. He put her down.

My terrible grief is multiplied by my guilt of submitting her to the testing torture she had to endure yesterday. Use this story to guide you. Do your research and ask a million questions like are the vet techs involved trained properly for a certain condition. And get two opinions from the very start. Don't let one vet rule your cats health.

Eight months ago my 12 year old spayed female named "Baby" thew a clot which slowed her using of her back leg, but she did alright.
Four months ago she threw another with more devastating affects, started walking like she was tipsy, but still alright. At that time she was put on and still is on a i/4 of an 81 mg bay aspirin every third day.
Today she seems worse and now I am highly concerned. According to the vet it is not that uncommon due to swirling in a cat's heart chamber and it could lodge anywhere and even kill them.
Before I got her she was a feral living along the water front for seven years. Now she is terrified by people and vets. I don't want to bring her in again only to make her worse.
I/She needs a miracle.

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

Lord,
Please wrap your comforting arms around Baby and her family as they go thru this again. She's already been thru so much but I know your hand was holding her tightly those first 7 years.

Thy will be done,
Amen

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

I would take her to the vet for proper investigation and perhaps other medications even if she is terrified for the vet and people. It could be a matter of life or death with blood cloths and also if they survive them they can become more brain damaged and disabled.

Hugs

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

I am so sorry your baby has this trouble. Unfortunately, there just isn't a lot you can do at home. This is really only vet terrain. ((((((hugs))))))

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

Baby has been to the vet several times for this and was even hospitalized for tests. She saw two vets who consulted and there general option is some cats throw blood clots and not a lot you can do. She was on a BP med and now aspirin. They did not in general think any therapy was going to help. But since she was doing fine on BP med and aspirin....until today...I thought everything was fine. The vet said many cats do well on aspirin therapy.

I don't know who or what to believe. I assume if heart meds would work they would have said to give them.

I don't know what to believe.

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

I agree on two points (having had a kitty with a heart condition and also one that threw a clot): if you suspect she has thrown another clot, please take her to the vet. It can be very painful. And then I'd see a cardiologist as soon as I could and get an echo of her heart.

Sending you prayers.

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

One of my civies, Beckley (aka Baby Girl) had two episodes like that 2 weeks ago. My vet didn't think their was much to do either. Austin, my first cat and the "founder" of this site after he was diagnosed with diabetes in 1996, died of a saddle embolus in 1998, but those clots originate in the veins leading to the lungs and almost always cause death. Austin was put on IV heparin and lived for 24 hours. I may try aspirin therapy on Beckley. After all, I take it per my cardiologist to help prevent clots.

Keep us updated on Baby.

update...Re: Civie throwing blood clots

I rushed Baby to the vets first thing yesterday as it was obvious she had thrown another clot. it was apparent after talking to the vet that she had not intended to recommend any aggressive treatment. That dumbfounded me! But what felt worse is I realized I had not pushed hard enough for answers when this first showed up. To tell the truth I was intimidated by the disease and scared, very scared. When I did press yesterday I got the answers I needed and have a consultation tomorrow at noon.
Baby's meds were changed from baby aspirin to pred 5mg once a day for now until after the Ultra Sound is done.
I pray I am acting in time. I lost my AJ a few days ago to cancer and I am still in misery over that.

I'll let you all know what the new doc says in case you experience this problem, but I surely hope you never have to.

Re: Civie throwing blood clots

I'm glad you got Baby to the vet and I hope they give her the help she needs. I lost a cat to a saddle thrombus a few years ago, and he died almost instantly. It was heartbreaking for me because I didn't know he had heart disease. For the past year I've been taking care of my civvie, Spirit, who has HCM. He is on Enalapril, Atenolol, and 1 whole baby aspirin (81 mg) every three days. He's been doing well. It was only by sheer luck that I found out he had heart disease. He had gone to the vet for something like an abscess and the vet noticed the heart murmur.

He's due to go back to the vet soon for a check up, and possibly a much-needed dental. I worry everyday that he'll throw a clot and suddenly go downhill.

My prayers are with you and Baby and I hope she recovers from this. Please keep us updated on your sweet girl.
