I posted my observations on this in another thread and was asked to post it as a new topic in this forum, so here it is!
Recently I read information from the American Diabetes Foundation that said: "Constipation is the most common gastrointestinal disorder in people with diabetes, affecting about one in four patients. Your chances of having constipation increase to 50% if you have nerve problems due to diabetes. Most constipation in people with diabetes is caused by failure of the nerves that control the muscles of the bowel or large intestine to work properly."
When I read that, I had a little "aha!" moment. Of course a lot of diabetic cats have hind leg weakness, my cat included, but I hadn't thought about the fact that the constipation could be happening for the same reason. I noticed that since I have been giving my cat methyl-B12 to hopefully help with her hind leg weakness, that she has gradually had less trouble with constipation. I am still giving her Metamucil in her food, but have been able to cut it back a bit, and I notice that she is more regular.
Every cat is different and I don't know for sure that it's the B12 that is helping, but it seemed worth mentioning!
