I forgot to tell everyone that B.K. has his dental (this was a procedure that had been scheduled once before, but B.K. had other ideas...long story!), had three teeth extracted, and is doing great! This procedure had been put off before, but when my handsome guy started chewing funny (would only chew with one side of his mouth) and had breath that would knock over a horse, it was time. Two of his teeth were really bad ("rotten" was the term used by the vet) and one was very loose and starting to rot, so it went away as well. The surgery went off without a hitch and, after he woke up, he was more active and happy at the vet's office than they have ever seen him. This continued after I brought him home (with pain medication). I gave him his pain med that night and the following morning, and had everything I could do to keep him from his usual activities of tree climbing, dog-terrorizing, puddle-sitting, worm-diving, and all the other important activities that make up B.K.'s day. He had a big dinner that night, had no interest in his pain medication, slept like a rock, and by the next morning he was going to kick the door down if I didn't let him out.
The night I brought him home, I thought he might not eat much because his mouth would be sore. I was wrong (of course, considering how he must have felt before his dental, a little mouth soreness may have seemed like nothing to him), and he didn't miss even one dose of insulin. The other benefit is that, while he is well regulated, his BG numbers have dropped more and - knock on wood - I may get to reduce his dose of Lantus!
