Hey everyone!
So, Mitzi had her appointment with a vet today to discuss changing her insulin to Prozinc. Well, what can I say, how much of an awful appointment that was!
The vet we saw initially suggested increasing Mitzi's caninsulin dose. I declined and said I wanted Mitzi on Prozinc as the caninsulin is not lasting the full 12 hours despite it being stated on the bottle that it is meant to, and the fact is works best in dogs, not cats.
The vet then suggested only feeding Mitzi twice per day. Again, I declined and informed her that Mitzi has always been a grazing cat and the RVC feline diabetes document suggests that a grazing cat should continue to be a grazing cat as long as they don't become overweight. (Mitzi is currently 3.2kg and whilst she is on the slimmer side, this is a good weight for her, but my preferred weight for her is 3.5kg so continuing grazing will not make her put weight on). The vet persisted that she should only be fed twice a day around the time of insulin. I told her that I would not be doing that, to which she responded "she has more chance of going into remission only being fed twice a day" I then responded with "I wouldn't like to only be fed twice a day, so it's not fair for my cat who has spent 14 years of her life grazing, to then suddenly have to change her frequency of meal times". But also, everyone has days where they feel more hungry than others, and I'm sure it's the same for cats also!
I pretty much had to fight Mitzi's corner in order to get the vet to prescribe Prozinc, which she eventually did.
She is now saying that Mitzi should be without insulin for 24 hours to ensure the caninsulin is completely out her system before we start the lowest dose of prozinc. (I'm actually super pleased she agreed to start with a low dose).
Sorry for the long post, just needed to rant about my experience!
Why are certain vets SO damn hard to work with!
