Autumn is home and oh boy is she in rough shape. I ended up having to shoot the ruff because it was the only place that wasn't so matted that I could get a syringe in. She is a breeze to test though so that is one plus. Once she has a chance to relax a little I'll get the clippers out and shave her down, so I have more options on where to shoot, as I perfer the flank or side to the ruff, but there was just not enough unmatted places on her to use anything else, and with those Ketones I wanted to get her started on insulin asap.
Of course she probably hasn't eaten well today, but still she has had a very stress filled day, and still came in at 356 on her first test. I gave her 1u of Lantus and will test her again right before we go to bed. I'm going to leave the shaving and starting her on her ABs until the morning, she has been through enough today, just want her to relax. Before the crazy new mommie starts shoving stuff down her throat and taking her clothes away.
She is extremely thin, for her body type, she is under 6lbs and judging by her bone structure I would guess in her prime her weight should be closer to 12-14lbs. She is long and tall. I haven't seen her move around much yet, as she is still pretty hunkered down, so I don't know if she has neuropathy or not yet, but just to be in the safe side I gave her a very shallow litter box, the one I normally use for baby kittens so if she does she should still be able to get in and out of it easily.
Right now she is having a nice long drink of water and was picking at some souped up Whitefish & Tuna Friskies...figured we would start with a fishy one and see how she does.
