Autumn is home and oh boy is she in rough shape. I ended up having to shoot the ruff because it was the only place that wasn't so matted that I could get a syringe in. She is a breeze to test though so that is one plus. Once she has a chance to relax a little I'll get the clippers out and shave her down, so I have more options on where to shoot, as I perfer the flank or side to the ruff, but there was just not enough unmatted places on her to use anything else, and with those Ketones I wanted to get her started on insulin asap.

Of course she probably hasn't eaten well today, but still she has had a very stress filled day, and still came in at 356 on her first test. I gave her 1u of Lantus and will test her again right before we go to bed. I'm going to leave the shaving and starting her on her ABs until the morning, she has been through enough today, just want her to relax. Before the crazy new mommie starts shoving stuff down her throat and taking her clothes away.

She is extremely thin, for her body type, she is under 6lbs and judging by her bone structure I would guess in her prime her weight should be closer to 12-14lbs. She is long and tall. I haven't seen her move around much yet, as she is still pretty hunkered down, so I don't know if she has neuropathy or not yet, but just to be in the safe side I gave her a very shallow litter box, the one I normally use for baby kittens so if she does she should still be able to get in and out of it easily.

Right now she is having a nice long drink of water and was picking at some souped up Whitefish & Tuna Friskies...figured we would start with a fishy one and see how she does.

Mel, I cannot even imagine a cat with that body type at 6 pounds. I would be bawling. You are amazing to hold it together for this lovely girl.

That is not too bad of BG at all for as long as she's gone untreated. Did she have insulin this AM?

Welcome home, Autumn!!

Nope no insulin this am this is her first shot besides the one unit of Prozinc that she got at the vet's office yesterday. And yes, picking her up I'm almost afraid I'm going to break her, so is quite literally fur, skin and bones...there isn't an ounce of meat on this girl. I think the only reason I'm holding it together right now is because the mats are hiding how malnurished she really is, once I get her shaved down tomorrow I'm sure there are going to be tears.

If we hadn't pulled this transport together as quickly as we did I'm not sure she would have lasted another week or two. I'm still not sure she will make it but by God I'm going to try. She is so very weak...she should be a little Maxwell looking at her body type and bone structure, it looks like she has some Maine Coon in her and yet she is smaller than Musette at her worse. I can't even imagine what I'm going to find under all those mats. A living, breathing skeleton cat, who somehow has remained so sweet that she held my hand on the trip home.

This truly is tear inducing. I have had two adult cats at or under 6 lbs - both were in the 8=10 lb range in their prime, but these were their last days at age 16 (cancer) and 18-1/2. I can't imagine anyone letting their cat get to this stage.

You are giving her the best shot of recovery that she could have - and we are all praying for her. Give her a pat and a gentle kiss from me. Take photos before and after the shaving. You may not want to look at them, but when she is better and puts on weight and her fur grows back you can have before and after photos. Maybe then you can share them.

Autumn, you may have used up a few lives, but you are home and in great hands. Let the healing happen. Eat well and enjoy your new family. Sweet kitties everywhere, that found new homes, are telling you it will be OK. Jeddie says, "You just have to hang on and get better".

I am so happy to hear that she is home and eating. It's so sad how under weight she is and matted. I'm sending her get well and thrive thoughts and prayers. If anyone can help this little girl, it's you and Jon.
