There are three (I think) UK newbies here at the moment. Just wanted to confirm about meters and strips - they are expensive at the high street chemist so look on ebay BUT be sure to look at sellers' ratings.
You can't go wrong with this meter at this price:

and then when you need strips just search for One Touch test strips and you should see a lot. You;ll also need lancets - just search in the same way.
It does seem overwhelming at first but once you've got your basic kit and are in a routine, and can do the tests without wasting too many strips (too little blood etc) you'll be fine. And always ask here if not - there is loads of support.
