Is there a reason these very important posts are not stickies? (I've always wondered that...)
we haven't made these two posts into stickies for two reasons:

  • to avoid becoming "top heavy" at the top of the forum
  • for some reason, we've found bumped up posts tend to be noticed more than stickies

an FYI about bookmarking informational posts marked with a star (not stickies)...

when the threads become too lengthy from repeated bumping the authors will repost the information and the "old" post is then deleted. this is done to eliminate wasted space on our database. when the posts are reposted, your bookmarks will no longer be valid. this is why we mark all informational posts with a star... in order to find them easily.

thanks for pointing that out, jill. i know i had the low numbers post linked into my signature line and it became one of the posts that "went away." i've seen others link them in their sig lines as well, so it's a good warning that the links might not be good after a time.

Thanks, Jill. I also have these in my signature block so I can refer newbies to them quickly and have noticed I have to keep them updated.

I don't know who the moderators are here or what their abilities are, but I wanted to mention something that we have in Yuku. I am a moderator of a Yuku forum, and I have the ability to delete a person's post from a thread. If you have that ability here, you could delete all the bumps, then just add one bump to put it to the top of the thread list. That would work in Yuku, but I am not familiar with phpBB. I am a member of quite a number of forums (mostly Disney related) and they are usually vBulletin.

Just a thought.

the names of the moderators can be found at the bottom of the index page. just click on "forum moderators" and "global moderators" to view the names.

yes, a moderator does have the ability to delete a post from a thread in phpBB. however, first you have to find the thread, find the post you want to delete, hit the delete button, then you're asked to confirm the action, then you have to return to the forum, find & click on the thread, and then find the next "bump" to delete. lather, rinse, and repeat for every single post you want to delete. @-)

considering we have at least five informational threads being bumped (sometimes as many as nine) each having anywhere between 25 - 50 "bumps" to be deleted individually... well, let's just say it's pretty time consuming and an on-going effort. also, all deleted posts are logged individually... increasing the database with more waste. that's why it's easier and more economical to delete an entire thread at once.

tonight i spent some time working on the "data ready" sticky to clarify and add the "dealing with low preshot numbers" and "don't panic! or how to handle low numbers" posts. i hope the revision will address concerns and make everybody happy.
if not, please PM your suggestions.
