Hi folks:
We had another high morning. AMPS was 460. We gave 1.75u again trying to be consistent for a few days.
Thoughts on why he’s high in the morning and not so bad the rest of the day?

There's a thing called the dawn phenomena. I think it has something to do with hormones and not eating over night that causes it. I'm not sure exactly. There is a way to check for it with overnight tests over a few nights. I wish I was good at inserting links like the other folks here are, but I'm totally tech-dumb! If you go to the home page of felinediabetes.com and search it, I think there's some info about it. So it could be that. Charlie is pretty much always higher in the am.

I’ll have to look for that article, thanks Claudia. Sometimes you think it’s just your cat ;)

Found this from web md:
Dawn phenomenon. The dawn phenomenon is the end result of a combination of natural body changes that occur during the sleep cycle and can be explained as follows. Between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., your body starts to increase the amounts of counter-regulatory hormones (growth hormone, cortisol, and catecholamines). These hormones work against insulin's action to drop blood sugars. The increased release of these hormones, at a time when bedtime insulin is wearing out, results in an increase in blood sugars. These combined events cause your body's blood sugar levels to rise in the morning.

So it looks like we’re gonna have to do a 3am/8am test some morning that we don’t have to work ;)

Do you leave food out overnight, Donna? You could freeze some and leave it out where Asher alone could get it? That might help even him out.

I have left out food overnight in the kitchen on numerous occasions recently, and back when they were on dry food, there was food 24/7. Neither cat seems to eat at night at all.
They stay upstairs in the bedroom with us, especially when it’s cold and they are trying to suck some heat from us :)

I guess I could put some food out in the bedroom if we needed Asher to eat overnight. It’s just not one of his habits, even tho he is a hoover kitty otherwise.
Could he have plain baked chicken treats at night or should it be real cat food?

I will try it with the chicken at night, I may have to set an alarm ;)

On another note we’ve been testing for ketones and he was negative again this morning. Ahhhhhh. Always relieved :)

We kind of do that now Sue, we just don’t feed it at night....yet :)

We started buying skinless chicken in the huge pack that is the cheapest per pound. When we have time, we bake the whole thing, then cube it in 1/4” chunks. We freeze slightly on a cookie sheet, then put it in a big ziplock bag. They don’t stick together this way. This way we can grab a handful for the day’s post test treats and etc, and by the time you need it, it is thawed.

So for night feeding I can just take some frozen out and leave it for Asher.

Good thought!

Well, we just tested Asher at +8.5 and he is at 303. That seems high to me. Do we have to take up his dose to 2 units or should I just be patient
and keep him at 1.75 for awhile?

-d.

Judgement call, I think, and you get to be the judge. You got decent numbers at 1.75 earlier and you did just change the food. If it were me, I wouldn't change tonight just because I would want to be around for testing when I increased. I would consider the 2 units tomorrow.

Let's see what others think.

That sounds very reasonable Sue. We would like to sleep tonight :)

We didn’t test a bunch today since I put some neosporin on his ears this morning. Wanted to give him a healing day without being poked so much.
But we need to know what’s going on too. Happy medium.

I’ll post his pmps tonight and his amps tomorrow.

Thanks for your help!
