Arthritic & Diabetic... Need help!

Before my 10 year old cat, Caesar, diagnosed with diabetes 2 days ago, I gave him glucosamine (Closequin) & anchovy/sardine oil (Omega 3 Pet) daily. I have been so vigilant about his food, giving only prescription DM for the past few days. I am worried to give him his glucosamine and fish oil because I'm paranoid that it will raise his blood sugar. He is on Lantis, two shots/day. The fish oil & Closequin really helped his arthritis. He's been on glucosamine since Jan. 2016 and fish oil since Oct. 2016. Please let me know what you do for your diabetic, arthritic cat. Do you mix glucosamine and or fish oil with insulin? I gave glucosamine/chondroitin supplement to my cat and it helped him a lot. It didn't seem to have an effect on his BG levels. I don't have experience with fish oil but if you look on the ingredients it should say if there is any sugar or carbs in it.

Hi,
I don't have an arthritic kitty but you have an interesting question. I am thinking that if he needs the supplements for QOL reasons, then it can be something you can work with. Fish oil is a ingredient in some cat foods and is more a of a fat vs. a carb/sugar. The glucosamine - as long as it doesn't have a sugar coating (which I doubt) then it wouldn't really increase the BG.

I just purchased both of these (Closequin and the Omega 3 pet) for my diabetic Acro cat who is suffering from arthritis. Do you home test? Did you find out if the Omegas will raise his blood sugar? I was trying pet CBD for about a week but it raised his numbers so I was going to give this a try...

I used Moxxor Omega 3 capsules for Saoirse (not an acro kitty) with no negative impact on BG levels. The oil is sourced from green-lipped mussels.

It's wise to check the source from which the omega 3 is derived as some may be from fish sources which carry a risk of heavy metal contamination. Also some fish oils may disagree with the individual cat and may cause nausea/GI issues, or even complete aversion (often salmon oil is an offender here). I've also heard mention of people using krill oil but I don't have any experience or research on that. Might be worth a web search to find out more, or to modify your thread title to ask for help with Cosequin and Omega 3 supplements.

Hi there,
Someone on this board (I forget who? Bronxs' dad maybe) is using the Omega 3 Pet and suggested it. I guess I always just assume that most people have done the research already if their using it. I think it's very much a case of which supplement will agree with the individual cat. Saoirse had pancreatitis so I had to be very watchful about which supplements did or didn't agree with her. She wouldn't eat food doctored with omega 3 oils (nauseated her) but the Moxxor, while not cheap, were great because the gel caps are really small and easy for a kitty to swallow.
