We are in the process of buying a ketone monitor for our Payne who is prone to DKA. The first monitor
we got did not measure ketones (read fine print:) and we are now getting the right one. We like the
Nova Max Plus, has anyone used this one for ketones? Also, the instructions say to use if BG is over 250,
does this apply to cats? Thanks!

A lot of human BG meters will display text that says something like" Ketones?", "check for ketones" when the BG is high for human like 300 or so. For felines it is not that unusual to have high number and usually they are not a concern. I am not aware of anyone using the Nova Max Plus for ketones. Other caretakers have used the Precision Xtra meter.

The reason we were interested in the Nova Max Plus is that it only needs .6 microliters for the
ketone test. I can get blood from Payne but even with a warm ear and rubbing, can get very little.
From what I understand, the Precision Xtra meter, needs more blood.
