Never heard of dewelpro but flea collars in general are a waste in my opinion. A good prescription oral flea med such as Comfortis did wonders for my cat (she had flea allergies, it was the only thing that worked).

Eucalyptus is toxic to cats. Citronella has a strong odor and is used to repel cats away from areas that you don't want them to go so certainly shouldn't be put around their necks.

Actually, all essential oils are toxic to cats. Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, drooling, tremors, ataxia, respiratory distress and liver failure.

So while this very questionable product may kill fleas, it may also harm your cat. I would not put any flea collar on a cat.

"Since the Seresto collars were introduced in 2012, there have been more than 75,000 incidents -- ranging from skin irritation to seizures to death -- reported to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to government documents obtained by a nonprofit group, CBS News reported.
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi wants a recall of the collars, which contain two different pesticides to combat fleas and ticks."

We have two cats that are always sneaking out the door. One is street smart but the other thinks it's a game to sit in the middle of the street. For these two I'd like to find a break-away collar so I can put a name and number tag on there. No luck there either, just too flimsy. The break-away feature is important, 40 years ago I came home just in time to find one of my cats hanging by his collar and fighting for air. Collars can be cute and/or serve a purpose but what's in them can be a state secret.

I worked in shelters and as an ACO and have seen too many awful things relating to collars - regular, flea and breakaway. Remember getting a call from a frantic woman whose cat had tried to get a collar off and managed to get it stuck in her mouth. The cat was terrified, running blind, hyperventilating, and the woman was afraid of her so she called the police for help. I was finally able to capture the poor kitty and had to cut the damned thing off. That cat was lucky someone was there but many are not. Had she been outside and/ or alone, the outcome would have been very different. It's also not uncommon for a cat to get a front leg stuck in a collar and if it's not discovered and removed in time, will cut into the armpit resulting in infection or worse if it's a flea collar full of pesticides. Any collar, including breakaways, can become embedded or be a choking/ hanging hazard.

I know collars w/ tags are important to help ID lost/ found animals but truly despise them on cats. Even our dogs don't wear them unless they're going somewhere. I remember a case about two family dogs playing in their fenced yard. One got his leg caught in the other dog's collar and their panic increased as the collar kept twisting and tightening. One suffocated and died; the other needed to have his leg amputated.

If a cat must wear something for identification purposes, make a paper collar, preferably with perforations, and write contact info on it. For flea control, use an oral or a safe topical like Advantage dosed appropriately.

@Deborah & Muffy(GA) & Wendall Oh thank you for that, it's one of those things that make me think "Is it just me?" This is a bit off track. Our favorite pet food store was a mom&pop operation that used to adopt cats, dogs, bunnies and turtles through the local shelter. The store got bigger and bigger to the point where they proudly posted their Mission Statement on the wall, a bunch of corporate BS. One day a first time cat owner was getting all set up with her extra tiny litter box and a 99 cent litter scoop. Last on her list was some hideous pink collar with rhinestones and I mumbled something about breakaway collars. The manager shot me a filthy look, "How dare you blah blah". It's the only store near us and two years ago when Andy somehow snuck out the door it was the logical place to put his poster up. "Oh no! If we did that for you we'd have to do it for everyone". I go there for oddball aquarium stuff if I have to but they lost me forever that day.

@Jani Lo I broke my own unwritten rule here today and owe you an apology. I've told new members for years there is no such thing as a stupid question here. We want new members to feel safe and to never feel mocked. You asked a simple question and got a few simple answers and then I went into full blown "I've got a story" mode that had nothing to do with your question. I sometimes forget there are other people in the room.
This was also your very first post and I don't want to be the idiot that makes it your last. I'm sorry for that.
