Good Morning All (11:50AM EST US)
Thank you everyone who has reached out so far. I am overwhelmed with joy over the support which makes me feel like I CAN DO THIS.
I've been trying to test Cleo's BG and have bee UNSUCCESFUL :blackeye:! She will not have the freeze dried treats - attempted the Pure Bites and Vital Essentials in various flavors to no avail. She was more receptive to a small tsp of her purina d/m savory wet food, however, she didn't stay long enough for me to get the shot. One time she stole the spoon and ran off.
But I think (hope and pray) that with a more desirable "treat" it can work.
Any thoughts, suggestions, advice about
(1) Tiki Cat (a) Crunchers (b) Soft & Chewy, and/or (c) Stix Wet Treats
(2) Fancy Feast® Purely Natural Cat Treats (a) chicken (b) tuna (c) salmon.

Thanks again!
Cleo :cat: and Angela

I use the Dr elseys kibble as a test treat. Just 3 or 4 little bits each time. Don’t know if anyone else will agree but it Seems to work for me

My kitty likes Orijen freeze dried treats. He initially turned up his nose at Pure Bites but did eventually come to really like them. My problem with Pure Bites is that so much of it ends up as "dust" at the bottom of the bag.

Thanks Lisa. I'm willing to try anything. Before dx, she used to be a free feeder on dry food and ate Soulistic wet food 2 x a day. I've withheld "kibble as treats" since she is at 10% carb with her d/m wet food.

Hi Martha - its something about "freeze-dried" that she just doesn't care for it. She has always turned her nose and walked away from freeze dried even before dx. I was hoping she would take a liking to freeze-dried since I've denied her every type of kibble/crunchy food for the last month, but NOPE.

even the Whole Life One Ingredient freeze-dried chicken?

you'd think my cats were crack addicts and that stuff was their next fix, my god they go nuts for those things

Orijen originals are also very popular with my kits

"crack addicts" - :D:joyful:ROFLMAO!
I practically bought every single ingredient freeze dried treat I could find. I offered her a sample of every package purchased and she had NO interest. And I know she was hungry. I even left a small piece of vital essentials chicken hearts out overnight on the counter (she's a counter-surfer) and still there in the am.

I would prefer to home test, but if I can't start soon (like yesterday) the Vet wants to libre her. Its not the price, its that every trip to the VET is sooooooo stressful on her.

Others can chime in, but I don't think you should worry so much about the carbs in her test treats for the time being. What ever it takes for Cleo to allow you to test, and for the capillaries to build up which will allow her to bleed easier, is what I would give her. Hopefully it will only take a couple of treats each test. Once you've got the routine down you can wean her off of the higher carb treats. I think I started testing using Purina Whisker Lickin's since that is what I had on hand and that is why my kitty liked.

Weaning... that's a great idea. Thank you so much!

A bit of cooked chicken or canned tuna can be used as treats.

She's not a fan of cooked chicken, but does go crazy for tuna. I think I have some Genova Yellow Fin Tuna in Water at home. Perhaps I'll start there.

As long as it doesn't have onion or garlic in it.

Great point.... so i checked the ingredients and they are "Ingredients: Solid White Yellowfin Tuna, Water, Sea Salt"
Any idea if Sea Salt is ok? Its just a teaspoon more or less just so I can (hopefully) test her BG.
Am I worrying too much? Have a crossed over to being an obsessive Mom? o_O
