Staying up tonight testing Teal'c every hour throughout the night. He has been on Prozinc since 11/11/19 . He still drinks a lot and pees a lot the litter box has become a true chore. I get the feeling the Prozinc is not doing much for him.

I am hating testing him not because of having to poke his ear but because of the high numbers. It's almost always a high number.

Finally he at +5 dropped down below 400 to 385. I am giving a treat after each test to reinforce a positive for him. Could the treat be influencing the readings? I'm using Purely Fancy Feast Natural Treats.

I am thinking he might benefit from a depot insulin like Lantus and am thinking about asking vet about switching. The vet has not had much to do with his treatment. Did a curve 3 days after dx at vet office. Gave me the Prozinc and said 2units. Then we went on vacation a cruise we had planned. Housed him at the vet office for 12 days and in that time they did 6BG. When we got back he said to up to 2.5 units. Since then I have changed him from high carb dry to Friskies pate and Fancy Feast Pate dropping his dose down to 1.75 because at 2units he ran even higher. The vet has not said to schedule any follow up visits. Just said if he starts howling the worst cry ever heard get him in there because it means trouble. Oh and let them know a couple days in advance when I need a new vial of prozinc.

I just want to see him get better. Staying high can't be good for him.

you do not have to test every hour. for a curve, every two hours will suffice. grab a nap or two.

looks like he is still bouncing from the blue number. as time goes on, the bounces will become less as his body becomes adjusted to lower numbers.

First, I’d stop testing him every hour tonight. Usually when we do a curve, we test every two hours unless the BG is dropping and more testing is needed but, otherwise, we don’t test hourly. Give yourselves a break on that tonight.

What I’m seeing is there are many nights with no tests at all after the preshot. It’s possible his dose is too high but we won’t know that without nighttime tests as cats often drop lower at night.

So we can determine if he needs more or less insulin, first you should always get a preshot test. Don’t assume that because he’s been high, he will also always be high at preshot.

Second, PZ onsets at about +2/+3 and can nadir as late as +7 or so. That means you’ll need a test or so sometime within that +3 to +7 timeframe so.

I’ve been working with another PZ user lately with an identical situation. Once we got him to start testing at night, we were able to find out the kitty needed more insulin. Here is his SS (be sure and look at the 2019 tab): Do Daa’s SS.

The SS is like a puzzle and so we test at different times to try and put that puzzle together as to what is going on. Cats often go lower at night. We can help you just as we have been helping Do Daa’s caregiver but it’s going to take some random spot checks between +3 and +7 plus the preshots both cycles.

Thank you I'm just so worried about him. I'm not ready to lose him. I thought after almost 2 months we would be doing better.

My problem is I work at night 5pm to 5 am. I do test at nights on my nights off at different times. My husband does the night time shot I have started testing before I go to work which is an hour before his feeding and shot it's also an hour after I pick up the food. I need to teach him how to test so he could do one before he goes to bed. That would be about +3 he goes to bed between 7 and 8. He works 4:30am to 4:30 pm. Not trying to make excuses but with my schedule there has to be a way I can work this out. I had today and tomorrow off. Then next week I have Thursday Saturday and Sunday off is there any way we can use the day time hours or my nights off to sort this out see what I need to do to help him

It’s great your husband does the nighttime shot. Even if you test an hour before his shot, he needs to be tested right before it so, yes, it would be really great if your husband could learn to test and could get the preshot and a before bed test.

Certainly, if you can get a few more tests throughout the cycle when you are home during the days and a couple spot checks when you are home at night (in addition to the preshots), that will help. If, on a day and night you are home once a week, you could do a curve (testing every two hours over a 12-hour period), that will also help.

We want to help you but we are always cautious about raising doses without knowing how low the dose is taking him. Let’s work together to see what kind of data you can get.

In addition, if he did go lower during the cycle, you can add bouncing on to it and the numbers rise quickly.

I have a question. He had a number below 200 again today and shot way up over 500 a couple times thru the day. Is there a point in time where he will be ok with the lower numbers or is this just the way he is going to be? I keep hoping there is a way to train his body not to react so hard to lower numbers since that is what we are trying to do is lower his numbers.

Bouncing, while hugely annoying to us, is a normal part of the process. Teal'c isn't used to spending time in normal numbers. The higher numbers have become a more familiar range -- hence the bouncing. As your kitty becomes reacclimatized to spending time in lower ranges, the bouncing will slow down or stop. I typically tell people that cats bounce -- until they stop. The point at which they stop is unpredictable because every cat is different (ECID).

I have a question. He had a number below 200 again today and shot way up over 500 a couple times thru the day. Is there a point in time where he will be ok with the lower numbers or is this just the way he is going to be? I keep hoping there is a way to train his body not to react so hard to lower numbers since that is what we are trying to do is lower his numbers.

Yes he did. I'm going to say I just need to keep pushing forward with what we are doing. I work to tonight I did ask husband to help test Teal'c he responded with how many time. I told him if he would just do once before shot and once before he lays down that would be great. Told him to text me the numbers so I can put in SS. we will see how it goes I expect not much the first few time. I'm using 30 gauge going to run out and get some 28 gauge lancets to help with him being successful at this.

Look for lancets that are labeled "For Alternate Site Testing" on the box. Walmart Relion brand has these. They are 26 gauge so can make the pokes even easier for hubbie. Box of 100 is $1.56.

Great for those doing paw pad testing too, instead of the ears.

That is what I ended up getting I want him to be successful so he doesn't give up. Any help I can get from him is a good thing. I also let him know how much him helping me means to me and Teal'c. He could have wanted nothing to do with this so I felt it was important to let him know he is wonderful.

After the fur shot it appears it took him a couple days to get back to where we were before it. Husband is checking before night shot but hasn't done a before bed check. Getting ready to do a check before work off tomorrow.
