Thanks for all the warm wishes everyone! :-D

Question: Now that Apollo is officially off the juice. What do I do from here? Periodically test him to make sure he is still in good ranges? How often do you test at cat once they go OTJ? I just want to make sure I follow the right steps for OTJ monitoring.

I'm at tbp right now and can't see BKs ss to see what I did - I'm sure I tapered off slowly. Have a look for an example -
I do recall I made a note on his ss on the first day I did not test! After all we went through it seemed unreal.

Nowadays, 2 years down the road, I test once or twice a month - holding my breath each time untill I hear the meter beep and deliver a green number. . .

Most people seem to wean themselves off testing. Test a couple of times a week, then a couple of times a month, then monthly. I'd also suggest testing if you think Apollo isn't feeling well since illness can raise BG levels. I'd also test if you see increases in drinking and/or peeing (i.e., polydipsia and/or polyuria). When it comes to illness or symptoms, your glucometer is your best friend. Likewise, if you get a higher than usual reading, test more often. An increase in BG may be an early sign of an illness or the need for a dental that could throw Apollo out of remission.

After the dance performance you two have given, I'll bet the 'what do we do now' feeling really is big about now. A good feeling but a strange one.

Hugs,

Totally! Apollo kept looking at me with this confused look like isn't it time for my treats (aka test)? I gave him a few purebites just like we always do in his testing spot, except this time no pokeys. I also find myself wanting to come here and post his results. ;-)

Can you explain more about the dental possibly throwing him out of remission? If I get him regular teeth cleanings is that enough to prevent that from happening?

I tested twice a day for a while, then after a few weeks, I tested once a day. Then after a while I did once a week. Sometimes I go for two weeks.
But because BigMac runs higher than some OTJ kitties I decided NOT to wait a full month between tests. That way if there is a problem I'll see it sooner.
We are used to the routine - so why change it too much?

Of course because we are not on insulin there is flexibility that we didn't have when I HAD to test. So if I skip a test one week, I will do it as soon as I can. I like to keep an eye on his numbers.

Good luck and congratulations again.

P.S. You don't need to leave the forum just because Apollo is in remission. All condos have the welcome mat out for OTJ kitties/owners to post. Your experience and opinions matter. :-D

I followed basically the same info that Sienne posted, but must admit that I slacked off on testing after 4 months OTJ
and my petsitter fed primarily HC for 2-3 weeks...and we wound up back on insulin after 5 months.
