Hi all, just gave my pal Sketch his first injection of Lantus. All went well...so far. I was wondering if anyone here has used slow release, long lasting "Tresiba" to control feline diabetes and if so what your experience has been. The ad for humans says "one shot any time of day"
Just wondering since Sketch is an outdoor / indoor cat and not the most cooperative at times this would have some definite appeal!
Thanks for any input or info you might have.

Nevermind - I hadn't heard of Tresiba, but here it is: https://www.tresiba.com/ I have not heard of anyone using this insulin in a cat.

The depot insulins like Lantus and Levemir are typically dosed once a day in people. Cats have a much faster metabolism and the insulin doesn't seem to last that long in cats. If I'm recalling correctly, studies have shown that it lasts 8-12 hours in cats. More concentrated solution wouldn't necessarily mean that it lasts longer.

We've got lots of tips that help people train their cats to come get tested and receive shots. Take a look at the "Where Can I Find?" thread. There are tips in both the "Basics: New to the Group?" sticky and in the lower portion of the first post under "Starting out with a diabetic cat." Look for testing and shooting tips. We gave punkin cooked chicken breast bits for pokey treats and he loved them. Would've allowed just about anything to be done to him if it included a bite of chicken.

You're going to want to start a spreadsheet - it's an essential tool for managing your cat's blood sugar, and for us to be able to see information to give you a hand. There are directions in the "New to the Group?" sticky. Ask if you need help and someone can start one and turn it over to to you maintain.

Glad to have you and Sketch here! Ask as many questions as you have. We've all been in your shoes.

Thanks Julie. I have downloaded the spreadsheet and had previously created my own to track his BG. The BG testing has gone surprisingly well but the injections have me a bit concerned because he is a bit unruly except on his term. I will look at the tips you suggested and see if I can come up with something that works. Thanks!
