Anyone used AB Doxycycline?

Gandalf was given Doxycycline for a "mild" UTI (culture produced bacteria, but not a lot, vet said). That was from a University vet who had to call 'scrip in to my local vet.

I swear the Univ. vet said BID, but the label says SID and they are split 100mg tablets, so he would be getting 50mg SID. Univ vet is French so I think something was misunderstood.

Info I found on Petmeds.com said dose for cats was 2mg/pound BID. Gandalf is 14 lbs, so that would only be 28mg.

Spoke to vet at clinic last night and they said 50mg BID would be OK, but I am concerned that's too much, especially as this is a tetracycline derivative. Info on Doxy also says not to use after expired as it can cause kidney damage, but other info said it is OK for kidneys.

So I'm wondering if anyone here has used this AB for their kitty, for what type of bacteria and what was the dose? Thanks. If it weren't the holiday, I'd just call the University.

50mg BID per cat is a standard doxycycline dose. I think it's usually prescribed at 5-10mg/kg (not lb) but would have to check. I assume they did a culture and sensitivity to determine that doxycycline was the best antibiotic -- it's an unusual one to use for a UTI.

Merlin was put on 0.5 ml BID for 2 weeks to rule out anything bacterial that was causing him to cough (later was DXd as asthma). Merlin was 16 pounds at the time. The vet prescribed the liquid doxy with grilled chicken flavoring.

Yes my cat jack has diabetes and he also had a tumor on his lung and was diagnosed with Bartonellas disease.. He was prescribed doxy for 20 days for the Bartonellas. It's a broad spectrum antibiotic. I was told by Jacks internist that Bartonella can interfer with the absorbtion of insulin. My boy is a mess and I don't know how to help him anymore. He's only 4 yrs old. can anyone suggest a different cat food? The doxycline did nothing. I'm giving him 11 units of Lantus @ 5am & again at 5pm. His BG levels are always 265 to 367! He"s not showing any signs of pain from his tumor yet and thru monthly x-rays it is not growing (yet). He eats 1 can of MD @ 5am & 1 can @ 5pm. Any suggestions

Thanks Jess, that makes more sense. Gandalf is 6.35 kg. Yes, they did a C&S, I said there was no point to doing the cysto if they wouldn't do a culture! I had to look it up because I had not heard of this AB before.

I will call the Univ. tomorrow just to confirm 'cause they'll probably have to call my clinic back so I can get more pills. They only gave me 7 total pills and he's supposed to have this for 14 days.

Especially if you are using pills/tablets/capsules, make sure you chase it with water or canned food. Doxy is one of the drues that can cause esophageal erosion if the pill sticks in the throat.

Yes, prescribing vet told me to do that, I syringe feed raw food to him afterwards because he also has had bad stomach reactions to ABs in the past. It is also recommended in what I found about the AB. But a reminder is always good!
