Hi all. I am waiting for a return call from Kitten's IM, but decided to inquire here also. Does anyone give their cat Sucralfate? And how does it effect their BG? Kitten is on Atopica(cyclosporine) which controls the coughing along with inhaled steroids. But, the Atopica is hitting her hard. She even had the hiccups last night. She has loud stomach hiccups that rock her little body. The pepcid helps but I need to coat her stomach. This situation is serious. How can a cat eat with stomach pain and hiccups? I tried FortiFlora which I had in the house. That helped her poo but seemed to upset her stomach more. I heard that squash or pumpkin can help with indigestion? Do they coat as well? Kitten has needed pain med 3x in over a month due to severe stomach pain. This is why I had her tested for panc and a full work up. Any suggestions on how to coat a Sugarbaby's belly safely? BTW .. I decreased her Atopica to EOD because she just cannot tolerate it. We tried this in Dec but the asthma attacks came back. Thanks for any input?

Yes, I used sulcrafate with Spitzer. I've also used it myself when reflux was ulcerating my esophagus.

It has to be given 1 hour before meals, so it can coat the mucosa before the food comes in.

Wikipedia on sulcrafate

It does have some sucrose in it. Remember - treat the condition, manage the diabetes. If there is any change in the glucose, you may need to adjust you insulin dose, or if off the juice, it may become necessary to add some insulin. Only your cat knows for sure ;-)

Hi.. I am concerned about the sucrose content from what I have been googling. May I ask why your kitty was on it and did it help? I am worried about her getting an ulcer if this continues. Kitten is not used to stomach upset and it makes her very agitated. The hiccups really upset her! Thanks.

Your first priority is getting her to eat, as was mine with Spitzer. He was throwing up and showing signs of inflammatory bowel disease. The sulcrafate was an attempt to help him eat and keep food down. For me, it was to heal erosion from reflux. It does help.

Yes, there is some sucrose in the forumlation; its part of the molecule. When you have other conditions in addition to diabetes, and the treatment for the other conditions elevates the glucose, and no other treatments will work, you adjust the insulin dose.

Actually. The sucrose is not absorbed into the body and her insulin does not need to be adjusted at all. Just a dose or two helped plus reducing the other med. she is eating great. Thanks.
