I'm looking into alternatives to Purina DM - trying to find something that's a) cheaper b) better quality (the vet says Purina DM is the best but people here say otherwise) - I know I can't expect both cheap and high-quality but I figure I can feed a combo of both and save a bit of money without compromising health too much. And also I want a food I don't have to get at the vet's, which is a bit out of the way.

ANYWAY on my searches I found a food called Boreal - it's grain-free and the label claims "low glycemic ingredients" which sounds appealing. The ingredients are salmon, chicken, and then the usual preservatives and added vitamins and minerals. Seems like it must be low carb but I can't find it on any of the infosheets. I think it's a new food. Anyone had experience with it?

Nope, but I do know a lot of people on here advise against fish on a regular basis, I think it has to do with the mercury if I remember correctly. Seeing as salmon is the first ingredient listed I would be hesitant to do that on a regular basis.

What kind of budget are you looking to stay within and how much food is Mottyl eating?

(For new members: Make food changes when on insulin if and only if you are home testing, because the numbers could change by 100 mg/dL and the insulin requirement drop by 2-3 units.)

You might start by getting some Fancy Feast Classic pates, adding in about 20-25% different food per day, and closely monitoring the glucose levels to identify impact. Doing it gradually lets you see if any GI upset is going to happen before it can become severe.

Running it through a carb calculator, it comes up with a negative number, so it's probably truly less than 5%, so on the carb count, it looks fine.

We do usually say to not feed fish on a daily basis due to the mercury problem.

Have you looked at the other foods available on Dr. Pierson's Food chart?

I know a lot of people here feed Wellness which is pretty high quality and I'm pretty sure is available in Canada. Fancy Feast is also available in Canada but instead of being called "Classics", I think they're called "pate's"

I don't want to pay more than $2 per 5.5 oz can - she eats one of those a day. She "should" be eating more according to her weight, but if she wants to eat less it's fine with me because she's quite overweight. I don't starve her but because she seems content and doesn't meow for more I don't give her more than that.

Yeah I spent like an hour at the pet store looking at the chart and the foods available... they did have Wellness but not any of the "meals" listed on the chart. I found the Merrick or whatever but when I got home I found an updated chart that showed the two flavours I got are no longer low carb. Basically wasted an hour. I got a couple Friskies which I think are okay according to the chart but it's hard to tell since the labels aren't always exactly the same. I guess I'll keep trying differet pet stores til I find one that carries the right food.
