I am going to be traveling to my Aunt's house in NJ for Thansgiving and will be gone all day. My mom will be there too so there will be no one at home to test/feed on schedule. We will have to rely on the autofeeder. Since Nap tends to dip sometimes and we will not be anywhere close to home I think I will be skipping his shots for the day. I hope this is not foolish, we have never skipped a day. Just wondering if anyone else will be doing the same. I will be gone from morning/early afternoon but will be home late that night so I can shoot the next morning. My aunt offered for me to bring him but between the long car ride, keeping him locked up in a new house with all the people without his Bella and then the smell of her cats and dog I think I would be doing him more harm than skipping a shot.

I am in the same boat and would love anyone's opinion. Imogen tends not to dip so I thought I would give her am shot and skip her pm shot. We were planning on going away for 4days but I don't feel comfortable leaving her with someone to shoot, so we are going to go to NJ as well and won't be back until 11pm. (normal shot time is 7pm)

Good to know I am not alone imogen!
Nap gets his shot at 6:30am/pm. Obviously won't be home for the Pm shot so that is off the table. I am thinking of maybe giving a BCS dose in the morning, but honestly my day will be spent worrying even with that. He is so closely monitored that I would go nuts thinking the whole day about it!

Hope there are some answers out there for both of us  Figured I would post now so that we are ahead of the game.

My problem with Donovan last Thanksgiving was that he does NOT like strange people in the house. The big chicken hid in my bedroom the whole time, instead of coming out for periodic snackages like he usually does. When I checked on him after our meal, he was WAY low, and I had to quickly get some HC nummies in him. If he was home alone, I'm pretty sure he would have eaten like normal and not had a problem. In hindsight, I probably should have shot less.

I may well be skipping a shot this Thanksgiving too.

As an alternative, I could board my cat: there is a place a fair distance from here that only boards cats (no barking dogs) and where they'd be willing to give my cat his shot or shots. Because of the distance I'd have to board him overnight.

BTW, most vet offer medical boarding too, but there you have the possibility of exposure to sick pets, and of course there will be barking dogs. However, I'm guessing that nearly all (or maybe all....) boarding situations won't test BG pre-shot.

Given that my cat's PS numbers vary, and I don't have a stable dosage worked out, I'm guessing it might be better in our case to skip the evening shot. But that's just a newbie guess. Your mileage may vary.

Going to Glamis (Camping) for Thanksgiving, but going to take Esmeralda w/us. This will be a first & an adventure......

I have had to board Essi a couple of weekends ago at the vet, and she came back worse. (just what i experienced)

She is better off w/me. Might be a bit noisy but at least she is w/me and getting some loven.

I have no answers but, want to wish you good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.

I hadn't thought that far ahead. I will have the same problem
Christmas is almost as bad, as the family comes here, and 2 cats will hide under bed all day. There will be no testing after +4.
I'm hoping more people will chime in, here.

Might it be an option to take cat(s) with you?

Or start introducing your cat to trustworthy pet sitter type now so cat won't freak when that person stops by.

Thank you Sally, same to you

Looks like a lot of us are in the same boat. I do not have the option of taking Nap with me. It will be way too much of a stress on him. If it were only 30 minutes away I would surely consider it but he loses his marbles during a 5 minute car ride. This would be over an hour. His BG would spike from the ride alone, not to mention everything else.

I am sure one day is not going to make a difference if we skip a shot. Our babes still had the shed that may help ride them through the day. I'm just going to skip it I think. Better safe than sorry.

Here's what I am doing--You know how you changed the shot time for daylight savings??
Well we live In Long island & will be way out at my cousin's for Thanksgiving--I'm going to start pushing her shot time ahead that week 15 minutes per am & pm so I can make it an hour or two later--If we are going at 3 we should be home by 9 & I'll shoot her then--Then do the reverse for the remainder of the week.. Hey 5 hrs with family is a gift & just about the perfect amount of hours!
Your cats will not be harmed by not getting a shot--They will just go higher & you can go back to reg. dose next day!
A Fur Shot is the same thing, so you can call it a fur shot--I however would like to shoot Moonie if I can..So I will use the time method-
We have a DPS, but she has a family, so i didnt even ask her...Hope everyone will have a happy holiday--Our babies we worry about them so!

Glad to see you guys are thinking ahead! I don't have that problem @ Thanksgiving because the main meal is enjoyed at my house. Spot couldn't care less about company and tends to hang out with us anyway. However there have been times when my mom isn't home and I have to be away from the house at shot time and have taken Spot with me. He doesn't really travel well....sings and sings about how much he hates car rides all the way to our destination and back, and when we get to our destination I usually let him stay in a spare bedroom or if there are no other animals and not many other people, he has the run of the house. His numbers are a little higher due to stress, but after about an hour after we get back home, he's usually back to normal. Make sure that you take a litter box, a few toys, their water and food dishes, the timed feeder, the testing supplies and insulin, and lc, mc, and hc food. It's kinda like traveling with a baby...I keep Spot's bag packed with mostly everything except his insulin and testing supplies.
There have also been times when he had to stay at home due to my work schedule so he got a "fur shot".
Either way you choose will be ok. Yep, fur shots mean higher numbers at the time shot time, but the insulin will bring him back down. You won't harm your kitty if you decide to do a fur shot.

Even if one has a DPS, we usually lower the dose for when they shoot. So that still messes up the BGs, right?
The most important thing is to have him safe, no matter what you do.
It sounds as if that would be way too stressful for him to go with you....

What time do you normally shoot in the morning and what time do you have to leave for the day?
Can you shoot in the morning and monitor him for hours before you go? Then, you can feed him and do what you have to do depending on his numbers, leaving food out for when you will not be home. You have the auto feeder, but you can just put some food in a dish as well as using that.

If you will not have a lot of time, maybe shoot a reduced dose so he has some insulin for that cycle....

We do have fur shots at times, and it takes a few cycles to get the shed back up, but it eventually is okay. So, rather than him having nothing, the regular or a reduced dose in the morning and skip the shot at night?? How does that sound to you?

Hi Pat,

I normally shoot around 6:30am. I will be leaving in the morning most likely that day to get to my aunt's house. I am going to see what his numbers do and I will most likely just shoot a reduced dose. Thanks for the advice
