Hi,

My cat Max has been having some issues lately. .It seemed to be that he was showing signs of a Uti 4 weeks ago, his keytones were normal took him to ER. They sent me home with antibiotics..did a urine test and said he had a lot of white blood cells. He was on Clavamox, and immediately improved ..two days after he was done with the series of antibiotics, the same things happened...going in and out of litter box I took him in to Er again, the vet said he didn't have a full enough bladder to get what they needed, plus they said they should wait longer due to antibiotics still in system. They were going to run a culture and urine test. He wasn't happy at all being there..sent us home after 5 hours..with Buprenorphine and proszasin hydrochloride..to relax eurethra. He was peeing normally once again after we got home. I had a follow up scheduled with my vet in two days. .
At the vet appt, once again they felt his bladder and felt he didn't have a full enough bladder for accurate testing. .although he did pee when we got home. They think its possible he could be stressed out, causing his eurethra to contract..gave me some Metacam for inflammation and to give Buprenorphine..made another appt. for this coming Sat.
Gave him the second dose of Metacam with dinner last night.

Here we are again. .5 am and he wakes me up, in and out of the litterbox..with only little amounts coming out. The vet said as long as something is coming out that is good.

They may want to do an xray of his bladder.

He pooped all three times before these episodes..

I am going broke and hate doing him like this. .

Has anyone else had these experiences?

They need to do the culture test. He may need a different antibiotic. Is it possible to leave him your vet's office for the day? I have had to do that with my cats before.

I lived with this a lot a while ago. Teasel sometimes had an infection (urine culture done) but sometimes not. It ended up being called idiopathic cystitis which can be aggravated by stress, changes in routine, etc. I treated episodes with buprenorphine and prazocin (sp?) like you have done. It helped with the symptoms but the episodes would recur. He ate prescription Urinary S/O wet food for a long time. That changed when he was diagnosed with diabetes last January and I switched him to wet DM prescription food mixed with Friskies or FF pates. I always add a fair bit of warm water to every meal and - touch wood - he's been OK. I think he also enjoys all the extra attention he gets around tests and shots.

The vet said he may have FLRD (I think), Feline lower respitory disease...caused by stress mostly.

I always mix warm water in with his food. .and he eats the same diet as your kitty. DM and FF pate.

I hate seeing him like that. .he is better now, he ate a little and the drugs have kicked in. Almost shot time, but his numbers will be high again from the Gabapentin..

My vet gave me a script for Prozac for him. .almost thinking I may need that after all of this stress and worry! I have not given him any of it yet. I wanted to get his prosazin (sp?) round finished.

I am going out of the country for work in four weeks and I'm scared to death! My boyfriend will be taking care of him while I'm gone, but I have been the one so closely taking care of him..so it will be hard not being able to do so.

Thank you for your story Kris!

I'm just nervous about starting a new med if I'll be away for two weeks. at the end of Nov. .Did she notice any adverse effects?

I think she found that her cat slept more and opted to lower the dose a bit. Maybe you could try it for a week while you're still here to assess.
