I have been feeding my cat EVO canned (He is recently in remission). He doesn't seem as interested in it as he was before and isn't eating much. Does anyone know the carb % in "Whiskas Chicken Dinner" or" Friskies Pate Chicken Dinner". I have a couple cans / containers of each that I wanted to try but I want to make sure they are low enough carbs before I try feeding them to him.

Dr. Pierson's list is the most recent and more current with updates. Binky's page haven't been updated since 2008 so some of those figures are outdated. Manufacturers change their formulas for cat food all the time and have 6 months to change the data they give to the public.

I rely on Dr. Pierson's list which was updated in Fall 2012 for my cat in remission.

Was the texture different in the Wellness? I think they have changes manufacturing plants and some people have been commenting their cats don't like the food any more.

Most of the Friskies pate styles are low carb except the Mixed grill is 11%. Fancy Feast Classic Pate style are nice low carb.

I didn't see those exact ones listed on any of the charts. There are several Friskies Pates listed but none that say "Chicken Dinner". The Whiskas is a tray food and I don't see that one either so unless other people have fed these without raising BG I think I will just skip them to be safe.

I was feeding EVO before - not Wellness - but the texture seems to be the same. He is just barely eating though. He will take a couple bites and walk away. He always ate well with dry food but wet food I seem to be having a hard time to get him to eat alot. He was eating okay when I first stared him on it but doesn't seem interested now. I looked into the Young Again food but it would cost me $80 for an 8lb bag.

From catinfo, org food list, there are some notes at the end.

The following companies refused to provide ‘typical nutrient
analysis’ data for inclusion on this chart. You will need to call and
ask for “typical nutrient analysis”, not “guaranteed analysis” or
choose another product from the list above.

MARS - WHISKAS/SHEBA
PETGUARD

Is he losing weight? Weigh him every couple of weeks. If he is losing weight then there is an issue. If not, then dont worry about him walking away from food.. now that he is OTj he may not need to eat as much.

The last time I had him at the vet while he was still on insulin (probably end of march) they weighed him and he was 13 lb 4oz. I took him on the weekend and they said he was 12 lbs 13oz. He started out as probably atleast 18lbs before he became diabetic. I thought he would have gained some weight back being in remission and not voiding / drinking so much.

I just went out to pick up some fancy feast to try. However I couldn't find anything that said Classic Fancy Feast? I ended up buying a couple cans.

Fancy Feast Chicken Feast Pate
Tender Liver & Chicken Feast Pate

Are these ones conidered low carb?

Average male cat, ideal weight, weighs around 11-12 pounds. Average female cat, ideal weight, weighs around 10-11 pounds. ECID of course. I have a very small female who is around 7 pounds. Maine coon and Bengals are more like 14-18 pounds.

You want your cat to be at his ideal weight. Your vet should know what this should be. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes and it can lead to insulin resistance.

Cats should have a defined waist, just before the hips. You should be able to easy feel the ribs, without an excess layer of fat hiding them.

Here is a body condition score chart. http://www.swaynevets.co.uk/downloads/catBodyConditionScoring.pdf Most of us are used to our cats being overweight and it is difficult to realize what a normal weight cat should look like.

He will take a couple bites and walk away.
Is he smacking his lips and walking away? Takes a bite and decides he does not want to eat? He may have nausea.

Tender Liver & Chicken Feast Pate is 4% carbs.
Chicken Feast Pate is 4%b carbs.

The word Classic, should be right below the flavor of the food.

Where do you live? US?

I feel like he is sort of under weight. He feels quite boney.. When i pet him I can really feel his spine.
I live in Canada so maybe that is why I am having trouble finding ones that say classic?

Yes, the food labels could be different in Canada.

Would you be willing to add some info to the user control panel? It would really help us.
Would you please provide us with some more information and put this in your user control panel? It helps us to help you better. This will take about 5 minutes of your time.
Think of this as having some very useful information at our finger tips for those that are replying to your posts. One reason we like to see this information in your signature is because if there is ever an emergency situation like a possible hypoglycemic episode, we don’t have to ask a lot of questions like what meter you are using to give you the best advice. Doing this signature update is totally optional, but it does help us to help you better.
If you are willing to do this, would you please do those updates when you get a chance? Thanks.
Go to the upper left corner of your screen and click on the words, User Control Panel
On the next screen, a row of tabs is presented. Select the Profile tab
On the next screen, there are a number of choices along the left hand side. Select Edit Profile.
Go down to the location field and enter your country, state/province, and city if you are willing to share that info.
Click on submit to save this change.

Still in the User Control Panel, Profile tab, this time select Edit Signature from the left hand list of options.
A free form text box appears.
We like to see information like your name, your cats name age and sex, the diagnosis date for the diabetes like this (DX 4/30/13), what meter you are using for testing, what insulin you are using , what you are feeding (wet or dry, what brands/style of food), any complicating health issues your cat may have, any additional medications your cat is receiving. If you are using a pet specific meter like an Alphatrak or Ipet, please change the font size on that text from Normal to Large (using the drop down arrow list in the middle of the editing commands)

Click on submit to save this information. Now, this will appear at the end of every post you make. You can update the info when you need to.

There is an additional document you can create to provide even more information about your cat. This is also optional to create this google document and link it into your signature. The profile is in addition to the synopsis info in your signature. See this link on the how to's of profile creation. http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79123

Ok I have updated that.
I will try feeding one of these cans tonight. Hoping the carb % is the same as the Classic cans.

Thank you for doing that signature update. I will help us.

One more update please? Would you add your location to the control panel too? user control panel, profile tab, edit profile, update location field and submit to save.

We have lots of Canada members and we can get you specific advice for your country once they see you live there. Best places to buy strips. Food choices, etc.

Is KIttycat hungry all the time? Begging for food? He may need to eat more than 2 cans of Fancy Feast.

I just set a can of Fancy Feast Chicken dinner in front of him and he literally jumped up and starting inhaling it. The whole can was gone in less than a minute - I guess he likes it! Hoping it is low enough carbs and doesn't spike his sugar. BG was 3.0 before eating. I will test again in a while.

Wendy and Tiggy live up and Canada. You might want to PM her and ask. I know she feeds some of the FF to her cats Tiggy and Bailey.

Hi! I'm from Ottawa :) Friskies Chicken Dinner is fine (approx. 10% carbs), but probably not as good as Wellness. I feed my cats that because it's financially more doable than specialty brands. All Friskies that say Paté are relatively safe (5-10%), as long as there is no mention of gravy (careful, there is a chicken flavour with the "in gravy" written in tiny to the right). I keep the Turkey/Cheese in gravy for emergencies only. As for the Whiskas trays, I had calculated once that the carbs content for the chicken dinner and beef dinner was about 25% (although not based on as-fed info, only the info provided by the company), so not good at all. I bought it on sale for the same price as Friskies, so I just feed the trays to my two other non-diabetic cats as a treat, but would never feed them to my diabetic cat.

Yep I feed the fancy feast pâtés.. They don't say classic on them but the pates are fine ie turkey and giblets feast, tender liver and chicken feast, saviry salmon feast and ocean whitefish and tuna feast.

Are they different in Canada? I have all those kinds and they all say Classic on them. It's on the bottom with a yellow strip. I rely on that strip sometimes because just going by color gets me in trouble. Some of the colors are really similar.

The ones under Tender on the list are also Classics. Three beef flavors and the liver and chicken.

For the OP, my cats started rejecting Evo and Wellness but I don't think it has to do with the food. It is probably that they need variety. Well hopefully that is the only reason nailbite_smile

I have experienced production batch issues with Wellness. A particular batch in Fall 2012 caused vomiting among several of the cats. I called and let them know. They sent me a $20 coupon, but I had a lot of searching to do to find a batch from a different production facility.

I'm now feeding Friskies as there are 14 cats in the house and the budget couldn't handle doing Wellness for that many.

Nope they arent different in Canada as far as I know.. I did email Purina and they said all pates in Canada are under 5% calories from carbs. They just dont say "classic" on them and the packaging looks a little diffeernt.

Thanks everyone!
I have been feeding him the Fancy Feast cans for a week now and his BG have still been good! I have been feeding the Turkey and Giblets, Liver and Chicken, and Chicken Pates. I grabbed a couple of the FF Beef Pates by accident but haven't fed them because I noticed nobody mentioned them in the list of foods they fed. Would these be low carb too?
His pee clumps are still quite large but he usually only pees 2 maybe 3 times a day. He normally drink his full bowl of water in a day too. Is this normal? I'm worried with how long his BG was high he might have kidney failure or some other issue going on.

A lot of cats don't like Beef flavors. Some cats are allergic to beef.

He normally drink his full bowl of water in a day too. Is this normal?
If your cat is on the low carb canned food and is still drinking a full dish of water too, sounds like something else is going on. I'd talk to your vet and perhaps check for hyperthyroidism. That is another condition that can cause excess water consumption.

To put your cats water consumption in perspective. My 3 cats only eat canned food, with 1 Tablespoon added water to each serving, 4 servings a day. They do not drink out of the water dish at all, for the last 6 months. I saw one of my cats take a small sip from the water dish in the last few days as it has been hotter here, high 80's-90's.
