I'm wondering if there's anyone else here from Alberta? I'm wondering what you feed your cat?? Just looking for some local suggestions for food- and/or anything else!
Hi and welcome I'm from quite a bit north of you in AB, about 8 hours I (and many others on this site) use Dr Lisas list for food, it's sorted by brand, in the column for carbs under % calories just keep it under 10 for diabetics: http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf The lower the carbs that kitty will eat, the better. Some of it is US only (like Friskies special diet) but quite a bit is in Canada. I was feeding the lower carbs flavors of the Wellness canned cat food and my cat liked it (she is now on an allergy food test otherwise I'd still be feeding it), it's in a lot of the local pet stores. It's a little more pricey since it's higher end, I know a lot of members feed the pate Fancy Feast classics that are cheaper and easy to find and still good. The list should give you a range of flavors and types that are good Dr Lisas site at http://www.catinfo.org/ has some great info on cats in general along with diabetic information as does this site, the "stickies" post topics at the top of each forum give a lot of information. Any other questions just ask, there are lots of helpful people on here
Where abouts in Alberta are you? I can list some good pet food stores for you to check out. I'm in Calgary.
Duh, just saw that you're also in Calgary! Go to The Cat House in the Stadium Shopping Centre off of 16th Ave N.W. (near the Foothills Hospital) for the best selection of cat food in the city. http://www.thecathouseinc.com/
Fairplay on Memorial drive and Kengsington Rd N.W. has some of the best prices, especially if your cat is licensed with the city (show them your "I Heart My Pet" card for a 10% discount).
Tailblazers is the best place to shop for raw diets.
i see you're using levemir, but wondered if you knew who has the best prices on lantus? i got the first vial at shopper's for $82- because it was next to the vet and open late on sunday! i'm wondering if it's cheaper anywhere else?
I don't know if its the same in Alberta. But in Ontario I get a pack of 5 lantus pens (5*3ml=15ml compared to a 10ml vial) for $99 from Costco. I heard the great Canadian superstore is $93.
We just use the pens or cartridges like mini vials and draw the dose with a syringe through their rubber stopper the same as with a bigger vial. The advantage is that since you are only using one at a time, the others (they come in packs of 5, each 3 mL) remain unopened and will last a lot longer. Plus you don't have to worry about dropping your one vial when you have several small cartridges.
In Winnipeg a five pack of cartridges is $94 at Real Canadian Superstore.
i guess i'm confused about the vial not lasting long enough. i figure i'll be going through them in about 3 weeks- and that's at his current does, his dose may be increased. are there bigger vials than the 100u ones?
I could be waaaaay off here, and if so please someone else correct me, but the Lantus packaging shows it is 100 units per mL - so a 10 mL vial would be 1000 units, and a 3 mL cartridge is 300 units. So a 10 mL vial, if that's what you have, should last 250 days, or each 3 mL cartridge would last 75 days at your current dose of 4 units per day.
OMG!! you are brilliant!!!! i just looked at the vial and you are totally right! i only ready the 100u/mL part and assumed that's how much was in the vial! how long is it suppose to last in the fridge (not on the door)? 6 months?
I have personally had four months and dropped it before it ran out. Another reason I moved to the pens as they are more robust and cheaper since you get five 3ml pens and only "open" one at a time so they last even longer. And you have backups if you drop one! I have seen people here get up to six months just watch for cloudiness or flakes or unexplained lack of effectiveness as you hit after four months.
