Anyone have any Adequan they don't need?

Champ's been on Adequan for almost two years. There is NONE for sale ANYWHERE right now. From searching the internet, it looks like the makers of Adequan had an inspection by the FDA, maybe (probably) something wasn't right, and they are being made to "update" their plant. There won't be any Adequan available for sale to ANYONE, vets or the public, until approximately March 2014. Champ's only missed one dose so far, but it already shows. He's showing pain by stopping when he's walking and frantically licking his wrists and shoulders. Cosequin doesn't do a thing for him. I've had him on Dasuquin and fish oil along with the Adequan and I'll continue them, but I have no idea if they do anything for him because I've never used them without the addition of Adequan until now. I really want to try to get some Adequan. If anyone has any they aren't using, I'll be more than happy to pay for it and I'll gladly pay the shipping (it would have to be expressed shipped because of the hot weather here in Las Vegas). I hope there's someone out there who can help my Champers!!!

Can't help with the supply problem but it looks like it depends on where you read too.

Here's their website and phone number...at least you could get on their email list for updates:

The company has established a dedicated webpage on www.adequan.com where concerned parties can register to receive future communications and updates on this matter. You may also contact our Customer Service Department at 1-800-458-0163.

Good luck to you!!

I've already done all the research on the internet and seen that website. There must have been a problem noticed by the FDA for them to have stated,

Luitpold’s NY facility has undergone significant renovations and upgrades to meet enhanced quality
standards and address observations made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These
renovations required cessation of manufacturing and affected Luitpold’s ability to release product. This
has resulted in shortages in the marketplace. Luitpold has worked in recent months to optimally allocate
inventory and manage the limited remaining supply, which has now been depleted.

Nobody gives up the amount of money they're losing by ceasing production unless they are being forced to do so. REALLY makes me wonder what the FDA found!! I talked to my vet yesterday and was told there is nothing else that can be prescribed that's as good as Adequan, to just keep giving the Dasuquin and fish oil and hope we can suffer through until March. There are going to be a lot of animals....horses, dogs, and cats....suffering.

I'm sorry you're still not able to track some down. It really IS scary to think about what must have happened here. Hopefully they'll be up and running sooner - and safer - than you expect. I would imagine the equine industry is REALLY upset about this.

I quickly called my vet after seeing this to see if I could get a refill on ours and they aren't giving out the vials of what they have left.

She said it was the human side of the company that got the plant shut down and it's going to be until Feb or April before the FDA will likely let them open again. They have plenty of adquan for veterinary use at the company but the FDA
isn't going to let them.
They will give me a couple of syringes so I'm going to get those and save what's left in my little vial.....

She also said I should start giving the Dasuquin again and fish oil to try to make up for the lack of Adequan in case we have to go without for awhile.
ETA: she said give these 6 weeks to show results.

They are making most everyone else come in to get their shot. She said they had many dogs who can't even get up without it so I can see why.

Hi Patty, I'm so sorry to hear this about the Adequan. I was about to ask my Vet for some Adequan for Maggie. She's on Dasuquin which is okay, but as you stated, not enough help.
Give Champ some scritches and hugs from us.

Thanks for the replies everyone!!

Ann-- Thanks for that link. I researched both drugs a little bit and I've sent an email off to my vet to ask his opinion. I find it odd that the manufacturers of Adequan specifically state they are a one-of-a-kind drug, yet Ichon (which is also an injectable, but half the price of Adequan and does not require a prescription) has the same active ingredient. I'm hoping my vet has the time to research this and let me know if this is a safe, effective alternative to the Adequan. I've also asked him about the Duralactin. Since it's made from milk, I don't know how a diabetic cat would fare with this. It's not an expensive supplement, so if my vet gives the okay, I'll try it along with the Dasuquin (the Duralactin label says it can be used with other glucosamine and chondroitin products). Fingers crossed we find a safe alternative!!!

Patty:

You might ask your vet if s/he is linked in with VIN (Veterinary Information Network). It's my understanding that there are veterinary pharmacists that participate on their discussion board. They may have some suggestions.

Alternatively, you could call a vet school. At one point I had a drug-related question and called the veterinary pharmacy at the U of Illinois. The pharmacists there were very helpful.

Of course, as I mentioned in a different discussion, a compounding pharmacy may be an option.

There is no generic Adequan® i.m.

According to FDA Generic Drug Guidelines, a generic drug must:
•Be approved by FDA
•Be proven as bioequivalent to innovator drug
•Comply with FDA manufacturing standards and label requirements

Not all innovator drugs have a generic equivalent.

Adequan® i.m. (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan)
is an FDA approved product and has no generic equivalent. emphasis added.

Thanks Sienne!! I'm looking into the compounding. I've actually found a couple pharmacies here in Las Vegas who do that so I'm going to call tomorrow when I have some free time and see if it's a possibility to have that done. I'm glad you mentioned it, because I wouldn't have thought of that on my own!!

Janet - if you've kept the bottle at the recommended temp (room temp...not too cold, not too hot), and it's not WAAAAAYYYY past it's expiration date, I'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck to you and Izzy!

Cartrophen is popular in Canada. If you google cartrophen and look at the Canadian distributor, they claim to distribute to the US. I've used it with success.
