Anyone have a diabetic w/ Stomatitis? Need some cures!

Tigger has stomatitis, probably steroid induced from 1 steroid shot he was given 4/18/13.

I'm using Pro-Den.

Another member recommended Maxi-guard oral cleansing gel, but it has glycerin, which she thought was ok for diabetes but I am reading is not good because it converts to glucose.

Anyone want to weigh in on that or have any other suggestions?

My understanding is that there is no cure for stomatitis, only palliative care.

I had a civie with advanced stomatis. It is painful so you need a pain killer like Buprenorphine, daily, twice to three times a day.

Sometimes, pulling all the teeth can help resolve the inflammation. I think this has around a 30-80 % success rate, depending on which website you believe.

My vet also recommended a good dental cleaning and daily tooth brushing.

We did not go the route of having all her teeth pulled. I was considering it, but then her heart murmur intensified and she went to stage 4 congestive heart failure and only survived for another 6 weeks.

I think treatment with steroids and antibiotics can be frustrating as often as it is successful. My sister had an FIV+ diabetic cat with stomatitis and she eventually had the vet do a full mouth extraction (he was already missing a lot of teeth) and that solved the stomatitis and allowed his BG to get under control on a very low dose of insulin.

I am not saying that is where you are headed, but just sharing the case study.

With that sort of chronic inflammation going on, if steroids work, then that is the priority and the diabetes treatment gets worked around it. Certainly, getting the stomatitis under control will help with BG control.

My cat had a major dental procedure done (just one canine tooth was a major extraction) and I was told to use Maxi-guard oral cleansing gel daily, and I do every morning.

Hows Tigger doing now he is off the glipizide?

Is it just once a day or can it be more often?
Are your brushing/wiping his remaining teeth?

I've seen raw gizzards suggested as a partial, natural cleaning option.

That's the 2nd time I've heard about chicken gizzards, will have to get some, & hope Tigger likes them.

Also the Maxi-guard - but it does have glycerin.

I guess it's as you say, the stomatitis has to be dealt with, & the glucose issue a secondary adjustment.

Tigger's lost all his molars now, but still has his canines & the 2nd teeth. Luckily his hasn't been as bad as what some of you are describing. That must be pure torture.

I am using Pro-Den - found it on Amazon, with excellent reviews. It's Aspergillus Niger, the same as what the CET dental chews have in them, without the glycerin. I've also looked at Wysong's Dentatreat
