Anyone have a cat that had both their top canines pulled????

My guy, Maynard, 18 had both his top canine teeth pulled and now one of the bottom ones is poking into the top lip. Not sure what can be done about this? He is miserable; he is really reluctant to eat because of this. He wants to eat, but as soon as he does, he pulls away and starts pawing at his mouth. I opened a new post to see if anyone else has had this problem

What a mess.........is this just something that he has to learn to use his mouth differently? He is 18

Yes, I have had a couple of kitties with both upper canines removed. I suspect that when recovering from anesthesia he bit through the upper lip. That happens sometimes. There is really nothing yo can do.

but even now when he tries to eat, his bottom tooth gets stuck in the hole in the top gum and then he paws at it.

He won't even eat anything. All he does is drink the juice from any food. I am syringe feeding him AD and clinicare now and he HATES it.

Can you turn his tinned food into a kind of mushed gruel if you add some water & smush it with a fork?

When Milo was really sick & wouldn't eat anything, I made him a kind of chicken soup, and just increased the thickness of it day by day 'til eventually it was like a chowder. It might be that he just needs liquid food until his gums & jaw heals.

Also, it might help if you have some Buprenex on hand, to give him small doses, to help with the pain. He is probably still suffering some pain from the tooth extractions.

I agree with the doctor, that it would be good to give him really mushy food, and even if you have to, syringe some A/D or something really soft into the side of his mouth. He needs to eat, and he will heal more quickly if he starts feeling better.

I would call the vet, if you have not done so, and ask them what they suggest, also.

yes, i have a call into the vet now and i have bup for him

is there a way they can file down the bottom teeth, so they are not pointy? maybe then the gum can heal?

I am syringe feeding him AD and clinicare now, but it is not pleasant for either of us. He fights me every single step of the way. He does not have as much discomfort when drinking water, so maybe keeping him on a liquid diet is the way to go at this point.

Basically, you may need a veterinary dentist to trim, root canal, and cap the now too long teeth. Its expensive.

Try using equal parts water and canned food and blend it until very smoolh. The "juice" will have more of the food in it and there won't be so much sold stuff he can't eat.

My girl has all 4 of her canines gone... They pulled them all. So not the same as what you are dealing with...
but it was definitely a major adjustment for her...
I had to take a butter knife to her pate foods and separate it into little pellets with spaces in between so she could roll them in her mouth
which was very difficult especially at first. She still scoots most of the food off her little dish and I have to push it back on for her,
(it's been a year) ....
anything that has chunks.. I have to cut them up for her with the side of the fork...
she was never one to stick her tongue out and get her food.... and she still doesn't ....

It sounds more difficult that he still has his bottom canines...

I just remembered that my son's cat had one lower fang.... ( talk about snaggletooth) and she adapted ( she was younger)

I am hoping that your furbaby will adapt too....
should definitely need some coddling for now, until he is healed and painfree.
I think the canines ( with their deep roots) take longer to heal than the other teeth.

He is going to the vet tomorrow, so we shall see. Not sure what they can do, but maybe they have some ideas....... confused_cat

He is trying to eat, but stops right after starting and then starts pawing and licking. His tongue is out of control and I don't think he knows how to control it. @-) I know he wants to eat, he is getting hungry, but..............

He does drink water pretty ok, however.

I got some chicken baby food and he seemed to like that most of yesterday. Had some issues, but not many. He, however, does not want any today. He tried one bite of canned food and then ran away.

I hope they have some ideas... He has to eat. Is there anything he loves like thin sliced lunchmeats....
something you could hand feed him..tiny strips..

i'm betting they thought he'd adapt more quickly...

Can you puree the food or mash it through a sieve to make it more like pudding / less biteable?

Oh, I feel so for Maynard, being so hungry but can't seem to eat properly.
J.D. is 18 and just had one badly abcessed top canine removed 6 weeks ago. He was on strong ABs for 2 weeks and bupe for a week because of the deepness of the abcess. He still is adjusting to that missing tooth. He is harder to feed, and sometimes I think his mouth hurts, but the dentist gave him an Excellent report 4 weeks after his dental.

I hope Maynard's vet can help him to feel better and eat better. Sending good vet visit vines today, and wise vet vines.
