I took my cat Yoyo to get a rabies vaccination June 22nd. He received the one year Purevax Feline rabies Live Canarypox Vector vaccination.

He got extremely lethargic and has been eating little or nothing although he is somewhat improved now. I could not for the life of me figure out what could be going on. I do have to admit that I was really alarmed because his symptoms seemed so similar to what some have posted at the symptoms of triaditis and pancreatitis. Then I happened to think --- this all started after his rabies shot. I did an internet search and sure enough those side effects can occur. It did not tell me how long they would last though.

He is better in that he seems more energetic. Yoyo typically shows up early for feeding/shot time, trying to speed up the clock but after the rabies shot, I would have to call and call and sometimes I could not get him to come at all. Today he showed up at shot & feeding time but it is like something is still wrong with his nose. His post test reward today was some cheese. He acted like he had no idea what it was. I forced a tiny piece into his mouth -- and he started eating it -- like he did not know it was food until he tasted it. I sometimes give him eight Temptations for reward if I have nothing else. Ordinarily he would turn flips for Temptations but the past few days he has acted like I was dropping pebbles in front of him. He is only eating a tablespoon or two of the food I put out for his meal. At his AM+5 test, he was acting really hungry but not eating. I rubbed some of the Fancy Feast still in his dish from his morning meal on his gums and he immediately started to eat it with relish. I am just perplexed. Yoyo the chow hound is a chow hound no more!

As all of you know, it sure does make dosing difficult when the cat is not eating!

Anybody have any experience with this?

Poor Yoyo. No, none of mine have had a reaction like that. Could Yoyo have picked up an upper respiratory infection somewhere? Maybe he can't smell well right now, that will cause them to not eat. Maybe try some steam to help open his nasal passages. And maybe a call into the vet to see what they think.

He doesn't sneeze or have a runny nose... I'm not sure what symptoms are common in cats with an upper respiratory infections. I picked up some baby food at the grocery store. It was chicken and had a very strong aroma. Yoyo ate that -- needing no encouragement at all.

Just because 2 things happen around the same time does NOT mean 1 caused the other.
In scientific terms, "correlation is not causation".

Diabetic kitties already have a pancrease that is not functioning well and are prone to other problems such as pancreatitis, hepatic lipidosis, and liver inflammation.

Its worth a vet check because of that.

I had a cat have a reaction to a rabies shot. Also used to work at a vet clinic and know it is uncommon but not super rare.
For my cat, she was lethargic and not eating for 24 hours post vax and she developed a "knot" at the injection site.
Her vet recommended no more rabies vaccine for her.
You should definitely report the symptoms to her vet.

I just checked for a knot and didn't find one. I should have checked for that days ago, I guess. One could have come and gone by now. I will definitely report the bad reaction to the clinic. I'm glad this is supposed to be a vaccine that does not cause cancer. Thanks!

Glad Yoyo ate. That is always good. I am giving you a link to some info about vaccinations. Hope you find some of it useful. Also, there is debate about the purevax not being linked to VAS(vaccine associated sarcoma). I will let you decide after you read(if you choose to). That is why it is important to always make sure your vet never vaccinates in the scruff. I had a sweet cat pass from VAS so I know the heartache and I hope noone else has to endure it.

Thank you for the link. I lost my dear, sweet Burt to fiborsarcoma 10 years ago. He was vaccinated between the shoulder blades. A very close friend of mine lost her cat last year -- also vaccinated between the shoulder blades. Two weeks ago I took one of my cats to a clinic to get his teeth cleaned (not my regular vet) and they were giving rabies vaccinations in the scruff. Shocking! I understand that the protocol to not vaccinate in the scruff came out in this state in 1995.

I will follow up on the purevax -- what I had read had lead me to believe that it did not cause sarcoma.
