Has anyone ever heard of this or know of a cat that has this?

Motor was just diagnosed before the holidays. I took him to the vet because he had been scratching near his left ear and it was scabbing. Told them to give him a bath, and when the vet tech brushed him a LARGE chunk of skin came off the left side of his body. He had to be stitched back up and seems to be healing nicely at this point.

I'm putting this on here, because I've heard that diabetes can make it worse. Now Motor has been OTJ for awhile now, and he's staying in the 200s mostly. (Of course after all this he is a bit higher due to stress.) But he's lost a LOT of weight and we can't seem to get him to eat much. It might be the cone of shame he's stuck in for awhile, but this was happening before ...

I'm just at a loss right now. He's got huge patches of shaved off hair and in a cone and just looks miserable. Thought I'd share on here and see if anyone had run across this before ... Thanks!

A rescue group called the Grannies in Pennsylvania had a cat in their rescue that had skin that was sloughing off. It turned out that he had a tumor on his liver. I know it sounds totally unrelated. The girl in the rescue group found out this is a very rare for this to happen. The person that told me this is very reputable. I remember thinking that I was going to google it but totally forgot until I saw your post.
 
You can friend the grannies on fb and send them a pm. I think the cat's name was Blue. I'm pretty sure it happened over the summer. They never put the details of what happened on fb but the girl that runs the group told me about it at an outreach event.
 
there was someone on here a few months back who had a cat with this kind of problem. I don't recall who it was, but I think Venita from DCIN was involved with this cat and human.

It was a very sad and scary situation and I don't recall what the outcome was.

Are they 100% sure it's EDS? I posted questions about EDS on the Community forum a few weeks back, but it wasn't a cat that was diagnosed. It was my niece. There are multiple "types" of EDS, and the type she has (which also relates to collagen) doesn't cause skin problems, it causes hyper-mobility in all of the joints in her body.

There are two cases I can remember where the skin tearing you mention have come up in the past year here.
One was "jtbank" who had a kitty named Gem, but Gem was diagnosed with Cushings.

The other was Sheila, who mentioned in one of her threads that "sloughing of skin" was a possible side effect from the chemo treatments that Jeddie was having to go through due to cancer. I don't think that Jeddie ever experienced that side effect though.


I don't know if any of their experiences would help, in terms of what possible steps you might be able to take to care for the skin tears, but thought I'd give you a link:

There was one other post that mentioned "sloughing" but the person who started the conversation never posted again after that. I think the question had more to do with it maybe being an allergy or allergic reaction to insulin shots.
