Any tips for post-dental home care?

Sebastian had a dental today. I have been meaning to do this since March but had other pressing cat matters that were priorities but finally got around to it.

Sebastian had 3 teeth pulled, one of them totall resorbed--no root left apparently. That one has to have a stitch I guess, not sure about the others. I will be picking him up in an hour. I know they will give me some Buprenex and general advice.

But does anyone else have any more tips....food? when/how often to give the Buprenex, etc.

Poor little guy, his mouth was in terrible shape. I am hoping this will MAYBE resolve his diabetes and send him into remission? He is regulated on only 1/4 unit of Lantus once a day and is mostly in the 200s.

Also, then gave him that 2 week shot 2 days ago...forgot what it's called now the long lasting antibiotic. S I will not be giving him any now.

He'll be woozy and should be given some time to wake thoroughly before attempting to eat or drink. You may want to crate him or block off stairs to prevent falls.

If he got fluids, he may need to urinate more. He may need help to the litterbox if he is still somewhat out of it.

Giving the pain meds 15-30 minutes before eating should help.

Modest amount of warm, soft food, maybe with water added for easy slurpage. Do a couple teaspoons at a time, in case the anesthesia upset his stomach.

Once things have healed up a bit, start teaching him to let you brush his teeth.
 
Well he gobbled up the food already out the minute we got home. He seems to have no symptoms at all other than his glucose was sky high--higher than it's been since I rescued him from the vet overdosing him. He was 431 and normally is in the 200s all day..and considering he had not eaten in 12 hours that means he went hypo at some point during the day.

Oh well, hopefullky we will all be back to normal. I was successful at squirting some Buprenex in him. They gave me BID 4 days worth. He had 3 teeth pulled and stitches in each. Seems totally normal and like nothing at all happened. Hopefully he is happily stoned.
 
By the way, I'm sure that everyone can appreciate this...My bill for this dental from the NYC vet--Gotham Vet on the UWS was $1500.

Yes, you can get up from the floor now. For 3 extractions, the various IV, pain killers, antibiotic, blah blah blah, oh and initial bloodwork and initial visit.

Ouch. and totally outrageous. No wonder so many peopel dump their pets at the kill shelter. This is just WRONG to charge this much. They did provide me with lovely color before and after photos of his teeth as well as the xrays. We should have also gotten a limo home for that price.

They got me for about 1800 last year for emergency dental on my cat, 9 teeth so I don`t feel so bad, that was here in Ohio. Glad Sebastian is eating, that is good news.

Ouch Terri. Well still looks like you got a deal compared to me!

And I have 2 more cats that need dentals. I can go tot he cheaper rescue vet and save money but not so thrilled about the care they get and the attention I receive there...

The great thing, in case any of you don't know is Care Credit. It's a credit card ONLY for healthcare costs--for people and vets....and basically you can take your charge and pay it over time WITH NO INTEREST. It depends on the vet --if they take--and they establish, I believe how long you can take to pay it. For me Fifth Ave Vet Specialists in NYC gave me a year to pay for Lenny's 2 weeks hospital stay (so that multiple thousand dollar bill is spplit into 12 payments iwth no interest--nice) and this new vet with the dental, I can pay the 1500 over 6 months--no interest. So it's a win win...makes it a little easier to cope with and yet you're no penalized as if you would be by putting it on an interest credit card.
