It depends upon the specific bacteria causing the infection.
Popular, wide-spectrum antibiotics are Clavamox, Baytril and Zeniquin. Both Baytril and Zeniquin are in the same family (quinolone class) of antibiotics and thus target similar bacteria.
I find that Baytril and Zeniquin cause less GI upset than Clavamox.

I just want to add Doxycycline to Larry's list. Doxycycline, Orbax, and Clavamox are the most used antibiotics for URIs at the shelter I work at (Orbax is typically prescribed together with either Doxy or Clavamox). Not all cats can tolerate it though (neither of my personal cats can).

Vet just prescribed azithromycin in tablet for possible URI if his symptoms don't change after this we'll look into possible polyps or seeing if his throat has something or nose cancer????

could it be seasonal allergies? Murphy has had good luck with doxy - he has trouble with congestion and needs zyrtec daily from April through the first snowfall - occasionally needs antibiotic - I prefer doxy

I do have doxy, I really don't know whats going on. The clear discharge has stopped, not the strange breathing while going to sleep.
