Good evening Lantus members!
I recently received my Lantus and was going to start Saturday 1 July but then remembered his depot is going to have to fill before I see any action. Also, his dose has lowered a little while dealing with pancreatitis so I've been holding the current one for a few days and was going to increase to 1.5U but there's still a little bouncing.

Last post about starting dose with him was recommended between 1.5U and 1.75U, so with his recent history should I still stick with 1.5U or maybe drop down to 1.25U? New Vet wants to calculate starting dose based on his weight, so that's around the 1.4U I mentioned previously.

Back to the start date question; Should I skip tomorrow AM shot to 100% ensure Prozinc is out of his system and start Lantus tomorrow for PM cycle? Or go ahead and start Lantus tomorrow AM? Thurs and Fri I'll only be able to do AMPS, PMPS, and before bed test. Which with Lantus, I think I am supposed to try for +2 and then based on that number, get another :bookworm:

OR (just thought of one more thing ;)) should I wait to start next week to make sure he really is over his bout of pancreatitis? Don't want to upset the little organ by switching insulins :p.

Thanks in advance! :bighug:

I do not think switching insulins will upset the pancreas.

I would not wait to start the Lantus -the Prozinc should be out of his system 12 hours after the last shot.

You are supposed to try to get at least one mid-cycle test if you are doing TR, but not necessarily with SLGS. If it were my cat, I think I would start on a day when I can get some mid-cycle tests, but then I am a testaholic and a scaredy cat. :p Yes, the depot does have to build, but you don't know how Lantus will affect Maury, so you can't assume you won't see action on the first shot (never assume anything with a cat! ;)). In other words, it is your call as to which day you make the switch.

Some cats have a strong reaction to an insulin switch. I would do the switch when you can monitor more closely. I would switch to a dose which is similar to, and maybe a tiny bit under his current dose, given his appy might be iffy with the pancreatitis.
