Hi All,

I just went to test Simmie and assumed he would need a shot by now since I've reduced his dose by 1 unit since 4 days ago. But, his test now shows 147 so I decided not to shoot. Is he dropping unusually fast? As mentioned before, I spent almost 2 weeks to move him from a high carb to a low carb diet and therefore it shouldn't cause such a change in his BG, should it?

The drop in numbers from a food change can happen any time, but usually within the first two weeks once they're on the new diet (meaning the "timer" doesn't start till all the high carb food is gone permanently). Some cats see a drop literally overnight, some cats can take the whole two weeks before there's any difference, and some cats can start dropping a little bit every day. ECID!

I would suggest instead of skipping tonight's shot to give a "token" dose of 1u so he doesn't skyrocket by morning and you guys don't lose too much momentum. In fact, you guys might want to stick with the 1u dose for the next few days and see if you can get ahead of these drops. If it proves to be too little, then you can increase again from the 1u (it's easier to find the right dose by increases than it is by decreases).

Hi Kpassa, as usual you are there for me and Simmie. I'll follow the recommendation then test more frequently tomorrow. Thank you. And thank all of you who help we newbies trying to deal with the particulars of stabilizing our sugar kitties.

You make a good point about when the timer starts concerning food change. As mentioned in previous posts Simmie wasn't fully transitioned until a few days ago.

I would like to give back at some point and maybe try and create some type of fund for this group, to help those with financial difficulties when caring for our sugar cats. I know everyone here has done so much already to get financial assistance to members who need help but since I do have time, and was in PR and marketing for a long time, maybe I could help. I don't know. I'll take this discussion onto another segment of the site.

Thank you all, again.

Hugs, Simmie and Lydette

So Simmie got 1 unit last night at 10:30 and we just tested at 308 so I continued with just 1 unit now. I'm planning to get him even lower carb food today so I am hoping that I might not have to increase it much in the future. We'll see! Have a great day all. :-D

Simmie just tested at 343. Much too high. I moved him to 1 unit am and pm since 3 units seemed too high. What do you think guys? Should I try 2 units 2 x a day for a couple of days? He definitely seemed out of sorts today but I think that's because he had been doing so remarkably well that I notice even small changes in his behavior. Thank you dear friends.

Will do. Thanks a lot. I'll be with him all night and sleep on the recliner...I'll keep a cup of ice with me on the sofa, the hypo kit at the ready, and love to go all around. Hubby is not crazy about the recliner bit but sometimes it's better for my spine so all is right with the world!

He's looking a lot more even today on the 2u. Can't wait to see what his pre-shot is tonight!

Hey you wonderful person,

I just posted another note. I wasn't sure if it is best to keep one post running long on our sugar babies or do a new post based on the issue we are dealing with at the time - hopefully I'll learn enough soon to do the right thing.

He tested pretty high this evening but because I am going to change his food again tomorrow to Tiki (0 carb) I'm going to stay on the 2 units for now. Hopefully he'll start becoming more consistent. Then, once I stabilize  I'll learn more about tight regulation.

Thanks again for keeping in touch. You're a real star Kpassa. So are so many of you of course.

At this point, you might want to join the Lantus TR forum if you want. There, people post daily "condos" of their cat's status and there are quite a few more people over there who can help with any and all questions. There is no "wrong" way to post, really, so if you want to stick around here on the Main Health Forum, you're more than welcome to do so. ;-)

this all sounds good. I just started reading much of the material you referenced on some of your posts or in signatures. I want to be sure I'm as familiar as possible with recommendations on TR before I hop over. Thank you again!

I would say come on over and join us now (if you haven't already)....

Skooter and I are all new to this as well and the amount of knowledge I have gained since going to the TR group has been invaluable.

It is funny because I kind of see The Main FDMB Forum board like college/medical school. We all start out completing our "generals" in The Main FDMB Form and then, we all "graduate" to the different Insulin Support Groups, just like those who graduate medical school pick a specialty to focus on. It is great to still be able to see people who joined around the same time as me thriving in the groups that work best for them.

There is an amazing wealth of information and support in the Lantus TR group. So far they have helped me get my IBD cat off of his dry food for that disease and onto a wet diet that his IBD is tolerating (knock on wood).....he was up to 5U 2Xday and currently is on 2.25U 2Xday....

I sure hope you will come check us out!

Morning everyone!
Simmie had better numbers this morning, 308...it would be nice to see it drop more then level off a bit for awhile.

Thanks for the advise on both groups. Med school was an excellent analogy and I also like the idea of a 1/2 way point to TR until I get a lot of the peripheral issues settled with our little iceman :-D . Like this morning...he was ravenous as always and no little treat was going to make him calm down to get his morning read, In the past, for the am process I have always given him a little food as soon I come down to settle him but I overslept so I thought it best to get the number asap. Well, can you say WRESTLING SCHOOL instead of Medical School? If anyone had seen us they would have been thinking I was abusing my poor kitty! After poking till the cows come home I got some blood to stay put and then fed him and gave him his ice, so he is happy now. So the :?: I don't think either of us can handle this battle royal every morning, I know his ears can't, so, once I go to 0 carb food is it a problem for him to eat a little before I start poking at him?

It takes roughly 15-20 minutes for food to start causing an increase in glucose (hence our hypo protocol of testing about every 20 min). It can be much easier to take the edge off the hunger with a teaspoon or two of food, then test, and feed the remainder and shoot.

Great, based on everything I have reading from this site it makes perfect sense. That's what I'll do. Take the edge off though? I think Simmie would need to sit down to an appetizer of a side of beef before acknowledging that he was even partially satiated. But, he is very happy now, looking like a little angel.

Simmie this morning... cat(2)_steam

Thank you for the rapid response BJM! Have a wonderful day all.
