I am late (again) to the party, but sure had fun reading all of the posts tonight! We sure have a lot of interesting peeps on here! I was born in Bradenton Florida, named Virginia Lynn after my mother, but was always called Lynn, I hated my old fashioned name growing up and had a hard time spelling it when I was young. I grew up in West Palm Beach and we moved to Orlando when I was entering the 6th grade. My dad was so happy to be leaving touristy West Palm Beach, of course it wasn't many more years that Disney was built! I moved to Colorado when I was 19, lived in Boulder, Netherland (high in the mountains) and Denver. I had never seen snow, so was so excited the first time I saw it! Moved back to Florida for a few years, got married and moved to Minnesota, Detroit Lakes area. We bought a small cabin on 15 acres, no plumbing or running water. My first winter we were still using an outhouse, I soon learned to use a slop pot at night! :p Moved back to Florida briefly and then moved to South Dakota, bought my DH's grandparents place, 40 acres and a small house, again no running water or plumbing! I am a pro at using outhouses! lol I lived in South Dakota for about 30 years and just moved back to Florida last December. I went from one of the coldest states to one of the hottest! I miss the fall weather, but come this winter when it is 20 below in SD, I will be glad of the Florida sunshine. All my family lives here, so it is great to be back with them. That's all folks! (said with a Porky Pig stutter) :D
Wow Lynn, you are like a pioneer! How long did you live without no plumbing!??? What a contrast of lives you have lived!! And I bet you won't miss all that cold weather, I sure wouldn't either. It was surprising to see your sister named Cindy JOE, most girl Joes drop the "E" but since I was named after my Dad too , they spelled it the masculine way.

Lynn, I lived in SD for a few years! Of course, I was just a kid (and we had indoor plumbing). I just remember watching the Weather Channel with my brother because my mom told us once it got above zero degrees we could go out and play...

Wow Lynn that was interesting. I would have loved it (the cabin, acres & outhouse) for sure. Before I turned five, I lived in Pompano Beach which is not too far from West Palm.

I was without plumbing in Minnesota for about a year, lots of lakes around, so I would bathe in them. Wasn't too bad except for the leeches! Eeek! Actually I messed up on the Cindy Joe, it is Jo. lol But my sister Perri Sue , was named after my dad and she was always getting stuff from the military thinking she was a guy!

Pompano is not far at all! The cabin life can be fun and I loved the woods, critters, etc., not so much the insects. The mosquitos can carry you away in Minnesota!

What part of SD, Rachel? Hard to believe the temps there, but the kids don't seem to care, still want to go out and play. Takes awhile to dress them though. lol

Okay - tell me about using an outhouse in the middle of a South Dakota winter!!!
Luckily I didn't have to use the outhouse in the winter when I moved to SD, we learned from our mistake in Minnesota, and the indoor plumbing was in place before the cold temps hit! In Minnesota, I tried to get all bundled up and use the outhouse at first, but soon learned to use an old fashion slop bucket at night. Not glamerous, but sure beat getting out there with 20 below temps!

A whole year!!!! Gosh, I am thinking that you are one tough cookie and that you can kick feline diabetes butt!!

Good thing you were used to cold temps Rachel! We would go to Sioux Falls when we needed some big city stuff, it was also the airport I used, so it was always a 2 hour or so trip there, than my flight. Between all of us here, we have traveled around the states and the world! :)

Atta girl Bobbie! Bubba is a trooper and so are you! You really put the effort and time in, I am sure you will win eventually! Rupert's has been a bit better, but still not good enough. I am facing the dilemma of switching insulin again, since I am running low. It has even lasted 2 months! :nailbiting: $$$ :nailbiting:

@CatX4 Lynn, I would think about changing to a depot insulin. He does react to the insulin but he is very unpredictable and he hasn't been in low ranges consistently. It might be that he needs the later nadir and flatter cycle. I would look into Levemir. Although we don't really start worrying about high dose conditions until 5 units or so, you are getting there. And Levemir is supposed to work better for high dose conditions as it isn't supposed to sting at higher doses.

Sometimes unpredictable cats do better on a depot insulin and you start to see calmer, more predictable cycles. It may be that he has a high dose condition (have you looked at the symptom thread on the high dose forum?) and you'll need to continue raising the dose. But sometimes high dose kitties break through with high doses and finally start to respond. I have seen every scenario with kitties who've switched - from continuing to bounce and be unpredictable for months and finally settling in to requiring high doses to responding right away with flatter calmer cycles and better numbers. If you could get use one pen, it wouldn't be terribly expensive the first time and you could see if it makes a difference.

IMHO, you have given ProZinc a good try, testing and getting good data and trying lots of options. But he doesn't fall into patterns like needing TID or working with a 11/13 schedule. I am a big fan of "the best insulin is the one that works for your cat". And even with your best efforts, it doesn't seem to be working well.

I was thinking the same thing, Sue, but you made it all much clearer and easier to make a tough decision. I am worried about learning a whole new insulin, etc., but I will do my best. Thank you so much for your help and advice, you are the best! :bighug:

Maybe before you switch over, go ahead and start reading the stickies in their forum now. And once you've had a chance to check them out, post and let them know you're coming over and ask any questions...that way you're ahead of the game.

Hey Lynn, I recently switched to Levemir. It is very different, but I'm starting to understand it and how to navigate the busy, crowded forum. Don't know if I can answer any of your questions, but I can try.

I was already counting on you Sharon! lol Thanks, I am sure I will have a lot of questions.

That's a good idea Rachel, thanks!

Hi all - I pop in occasionally, though I haven't used ProZinc since mid 2012. Had to join the party - I love these!

I was born in the far north suburbs of Chicago and grew up there. Named after my mom's Aunt Louise and my grandmother Anna... but you'd never have known there were a THOUSAND different ways to spell Lu-Ann. Not even my job got it right when I got an award (I had only worked here for 27 yrs, so really, HOW could they have known?) :)

Nothing eventful about my birth, other than my dad was at work on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, and my aunt, 2 cousins and 2 sisters drove mom to the hospital in their brand new car - praying my mom would hold on until they got there!!! YIKES!!! I was born at 6:14 and weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces.

... but my favorite story was moving to eastern NC, now 28 yrs ago. My last name is Monson - Scandinavian - not terribly common in these parts. Only one other guy lived in town by that name, and they say his ghost still frequents the water plant where he used to work. People would ask me "Are you any kin to Herb Monson?" ... and of course, since I have a diet-controlled diabetic cat named Herb... I responded, "I'm his mommy!" I don't think people from the south ever really "get" people not from the south! LOL

Oh we "get" you it's just that we haven't gotten over the aggression from the north LOL. What took you to NC? And what part?

Lu Ann, I was a southerner in yankee territory and I am not sure they ever got me either! They always made fun of my "y'alls", I lost most of my accent over the years, but that still stuck! lol I have a cousin Lou Anne with an "e" and I have an Uncle Bubba (figured you'd like that Bobbie). :D
