This box has been around for quite awhile. I used it years ago with my diabetic cats. I think it used a different kind of seed though.

With the one that I had, you could rinse out the seed to make it last longer.
 
I buy 20 lb bags of safflower seeds for bird food for about $10-$15 dollars from local bird feed suppliers. I wonder if you could use those - would definitely be cheaper
 
You can also try the Breeze Litter System...you put pads in the bottom tray to absorb the urine (but you don't have to if you need a urine sample you just remove the pad) and it uses special pellets in the top

But not all cats are big fans...out of my 3, I have 1 that will use it readily, 1 that will use it once in awhile, and 1 that refuses to get anywhere near it

I am guessing it is not clean safflower seeds that are used for birdseed and you'd end up with a lot of debris in the urine sample buying them not made specifically for urine collection.


Unless you are needing to get a urine sample often, I think the cost of this system would outweigh the cost of an occasional cystocentesis.
 
There's one big problem with the BD Magnifier if you're using Lantus vials...the vials don't fit as well as some other insulins and you need to make sure you stabilize the vial or it can come crashing down to the floor, leaving you with a puddle of tears mixed with $200 worth of Lantus

I have the pen, it doesn't fit the pen. But I draw as normal then put the magnifyer on the syringe and tweak my dose
