so i noticed Annie was going to have an active pm cycle tonight so i've been testing her every hour and now every half hour. These are our first greens, and although it's 4am and i'm tired, i cannot sleep till i know she's ok.

waiting for her numbers to rise a bit

what does this mean for the future of her dosing?? do i still hold this dose for a bit??

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

so right now she's at 52 - this is my lowest experience yet. i'm trying to stay calm but in reality, i'm getting pretty nervous.

i just gave her a half teaspoon of HC food because i don't think anyone is around right now to guide me through this. I've been reading through the How To Handle Low Numbers, and it said anything under 50 is considered low and then i followed the steps.

She seems fine though at the moment.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Wow, sorry this happened for the first time in the wee hours. You are doing great, you've done everything right so far. any more tests? The last on your SS was +6~61. The 52 was at 5:00am your time? What + number was that, +7? You should be nearing nadir, hang in there. The HC was just the right thing to do for the 52. I'm up for a while.

Numbers in the 50s are not dangerous in themselves, it's just that we have to watch carefully at this point so they don't dive lower. You handled this perfectly, and on your own! :-D :-D :thumbup

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Ann, if you want to go to sleep, I can stay up (I was going to go btd).

Star, do you have any update on the last test, and what + hour are you on now?

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

I just got up so I'll be here for an hour or two watching Tess. If you were heading to bed go ahead.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Okay. The best I can figure from her other condo, is that Star shot around 11:30pmEST and it's now 6:30amEST, so it's +7, now. I hope Star is testing, but just not posting.
Ann, it's 3:30 in the morning where you are. I'll get up in an hour and relieve you.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

From her SS she is probably past nadir. I just saw it when I came on and wanted to give her a little moral support. Wish I had been up earlier, but DH jad the last shift. Tess has been low all night, but she is most active late in the cycle. So don't worry, I 'm going to be up anyway.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

You did a great job Star!! :-D I experienced the same for the first time last weekend. It is nerve-racking handling it on your own, but you did the right thing with giving some HC food and continuing to watch. Kudos!! :YMHUG:

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Any updates? You were great, I hope she came up and you got to get some sleep. Lots more beans on the Board now. I'm btb till shot time.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Excellent handling of a scary first-time low, Star. You did great. I'm assuming that you were able finally to get to bed. Annie's numbers were rising at PMPS +7 and you collected some good data last night! It will be interesting to see what Annie decides to do today.
Hope you got some sleep!

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Hi, i'm really sorry everyone, at +6 i decided i couldn't keep my eyes open anymore(had also just worked 8 hours and got in at 1:30), and i went to bed and got my hubby to wake up early to watch and test her.

I really appreciate everyone checking in and offering to watch. I hope this happens during the day next time when i'm home and awake and alert

Annie decided to shoot up to 338 for her morning preshot.

i was almost certain she would be starting to rise just after the +6 but i wasn't sure what would happen. I wasn't sure what was considered too low because the protocol says below 50, but on here i've seen people's SS and some say you can go down to 40... so i just wanted to give her a teeny boost with the HC

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

No problem, next time just let us know when you get te rise and head to bed. She's bouncing now, which is to be expected form that first green. Sorry there was no one here when you needed it.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

It's ok, it was a horrible time of day for that, haha

the rise actually came when my hubby was watching her right when i went to bed.... he doesn't understand how to post on this board and i was too tired to explain it to him at that point.

i hope she comes back down soon though, we've been waiting for a cycle like this to happen.

just for reference - what number will i see when it IS too low? because although she got down to 48, she seemed fine.... she was alert and active and nothing out of the norm.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Knowing what's "too low" in the broader picture is hard to answer. As a general guideline, numbers below 50 in a newly diagnosed cat (i.e., within the first year of diagnosis) warrant a dose reduction. We encourage you to intervene with HC food if your cat's numbers fall below 50. (For those of us with cats that have been diabetic for more than a year, the cutting point is below 40.)

However, many times, when you see numbers dropping you may want to feed a bit of LC to see if you can get Annie surfing in green numbers. The longer a cat spends in good, green numbers, the greater the chance that the pancreas can heal. If drops are fast or big, you may opt to intervene sooner or with MC or even HC food. However, you need to know your cat, what's typical of your cat's pattern, and how carb sensitive your cat is.

Re: Annie's first green... keeps dropping so far

Star

Sorry I just missed you last night....evidently I had just turned off my computer right before you posted last night in yesterday's condo. I could have stayed up with you.

It's probably a good idea to teach DH how to post. Many of the DHs here who test, also post. Our commitment here is that if one of us starts to help you through low numbers, we stay up with you until we know the kitty is safe or we can tag team with another member to be with you. Many of us have stayed up many late hours waiting for someone to come back on and they never did. It worries us but also takes a toll because most of us have our kitties to manage and might have been up the night before. I know you and DH probably did not know that and it's ok. We'd love for him to post when you can't.

On your question how low is too low......while the mid to high 40s are safe for most cats, you have little cushion room for them to stay out of the 30s. Several of us have caught our kitties in the 20s with no symptoms. But ECID...I've also seen people say their cat was exhibiting hypo symptoms in the 40s.

You will need to figure it out with Annie but lower is not better.....if she gets in the 40s, you should feed her to nudge her up onto her surfboard ( get her into the 50s). What you feed depends on where she is in the cycle. if she throws you a 40 early in the cycle, it might take a bit higher low carb to get her in the 50s to surf. If its late in the cycle, her regular low carb might do the trick.

Remember she earned a dose reduction with that 48. It's ok to shoot the same dose through the bounce once, but you should take her down by .25u tonight.

Lastly....housekeeping...could you please just change your subject line in this condo to show todays date and her AMPs and then link yesterday's condo in your first post today? Thanks so much and please let us know if you have questions.

Thanks for the info, I know i have been telling him to post on this board for awhile now if he needs to and i've been trying to show him how it works. After last night, i'm gonna MAKE him, haha... i knew when i went to bed someone would see my topic shortly.

so last night when she went down to 48... she was fine... can i just assume she will be fine on that number next time?? obviously i would still be watching her.

With every new experience i'm learning a little bit more and more. it's alot to process. I admire all of you that actually know as much as you do because honestly, i can't see myself ever getting it completely  but who knows.

I started a new topic with her amps and linked yesterdays condo to it already! should i just link this one in?

Super...yes, just link this one in to today's condo...in your first post.

Since we do one condo per cat per day, if you need help on a new day, just keep using the same condo after the helping posse arrives :-D

You'll get it! I'm so glad to see Annie doing well. Don't forget about the reduction I f you didn't give it this morning :-D
