Hi, Angel is on a trial of Prozinc in the UK.

He's already earned a dose reduction, he's on 0.75. He weighs 5.5 kilos /12 lbs. I'm using alphatrak and guidelines here are not to shoot under 10 /180. When I spoke to the vet she said as long as I was around to keep an eye on him it should be fine to shoot as long as he was over 6 /110!! I would NOT shoot him if he was that low. However I've been getting readings of between 8.8-9.9 /158-178 on the alphatrak and shooting him and keeping an eye on him and he's been fine. How low would you say I can SAFELY go before delaying his dose? BTW I always make sure he eats after his ps especially if it's below 10 /180.

Gosh, what a difference the Prozinc has made, Cassandra!

Those numbers seem very stable, so I think you could reduce the preshot number or increase the dose a tad. I have no experience of using Prozinc though, and think you should hear from those who do have experience.
Edited to add: Forgot that Cassandra is now using Alphatrak meter (have struck-through text above).

You may well get more replies here on the the Health forum, but I'm going to post a link to this thread in the Prozinc/PZI forum too.

Hi Cassandra,

I have to disagree with your vet. We do have PZI users who shoot at 130/150 after they have a lot of data, but very, very rarely any lower than that. So he is 158 - 178 at pre shot? That would be 128-148 on a human meter? I think I would try small mini meals first. If he continues in that range, and you can definitely monitor, you might try shoot a drop of insulin. (We have ways to measure a drop.)

At this point, it's a balance between trying to get him into remission numbers, and doing that safely. As he is new to the insulin, I think I'd err on the side of caution.

Hi there! Sue and Eliz gave great advice. I basically wanted to just agree with them and say hello! I wouldn't shoot at such low numbers or would only do a drop AND monitor closely. Safer for your kitty!

Cassandra are you using U40 syringes?
I can let you have some U100 syringes which can be helpful in measuring smaller doses of U40 insulin (if you need to do that soon). There's a conversion chart here (somewhere!) that enables you to measure the doses easily.

Short version:
If you use a U-100 syringe with half unit marks to measure a U-40 insulin, each tick mark is 0.2 units.

Why? Because a U-40 insulin is only 40% as concentrated compared to a U-100 insulin ie,there are 40 units per mL vs 100 units per mL.
The conversion formula is:
0.4 concentration * 0.5 U-100 tick mark = 0.2 units of the U-40 insulin
