So...I kept Angel in all night, no access to food. Today is 4 weeks otj.

He's been high since Friday evening apart from Saturday night when he was 6.8. This morning he was 9.4/170 on the alphatrak. I spoke to Ruth, we decided to give him until tomorrow, I am going to regulate his food, worried I've been overfeeding, and also he will only get insulin tomorrow if he's above 7.5. I'm so disappointed, he nearly made it to the trial's official 'in remission'. I just hope I've been overfeeding him or maybe the carb content of the non prescription food has changed, I'll just give him the purina dm now and see how he does.

I'm so disappointed for him :YMSIGH:

How long before AMBG was Angel's previous meal, Cassandra?

Also, what is Angel's normal feeding schedule.?

I was so hopeful today.

I monitored Angel's food yesterday, did not give him any food overnight, and got a lovely low reading (best ever) this morning. I've monitored his food again today and became convinced I was overfeeding and that's why he was high. Tested him this evening 2 hours after he'd last eaten and he was 8.3/150. I won't give him any insulin unless he's high again in the morning, but I'm so disappointed.

Did you ever try feeding him a lower carb food like Fancy Feast or Friskies? Purina DM is not low carb by any means. Fancy Feast or similar type wet food could be what he needs to push him over the edge into remission and stay there. ;-)

Can't get them in the UK!! I've been giving him the Smilla, Bozita and gourmet low carb varieties which are all lower than the dm, but I wondered if maybe they had changed their ingredients and that's why he was higher. DM wet is 7% I think. Bozita is 4, Smilla is between 1 and 3.

I'll try him on Smilla for the rest of the day and keep my fingers crossed. He was 8.5/just under 155 this morning (alphatrak) but I didn't give him insulin as he's thrown up a bit of bile a couple of times, he seems fine in himself but I'll speak to the vet.

Cassandra

I am sorry to read about angel. Hopefully if you find the right food things will settle down. Has angel been diagnosed with pancreatitis at all? Just mentioned as sometimes a change in food can cause a flair and maybe this could affect BG. Just a thought.

Hugs

Sarah

HI Cassandra,

I'm really sorry that Angel's numbers are creeping up. My little one's in the same boat.

Again, how long are you letting Angel go between meals? The bile vomiting could be indicative of excess stomach acid when his tummy is empty. I don't know whether this might help, but Saoirse runs higher when she has had to fast too long (and she vomited up foam/bile a couple of times when her tum was empty after our previous vet insisted on transitioning her to only 2 meals a day).

I learned from Mel (MommaOfMuse) that when a cat's BG drops low after fasting the liver can panic and dump extra glucose into the bloodstream, thus spiking BG levels. Saoirse does much better on more frequent, smaller meals. If you're not feeding lots of small meals, could you maybe try that with Angel (and the kittens)?

thanks so much both of you. Angel hasn't been diagnosed with pancreatitis, he was checked before he went on the trial.

Aine, sorry you're in the same situation. I should have thought of stomach acid, since I have it badly and it affects me the same way sometimes!!! So the plan I've come up with, (with Ruth) is to give him only the Smilla for a couple of days, which is the lowest carb food I have, and also during these couple of days to increase his shot level to 11 on the alphatrak. Funnily enough I've been feeding him little and often today and he hasn't been sick. Well I just tested him (less than 2 hours after his last 'snack') and he was....6.9!!! (125) on alphatrak that's great. Just hope this works.
xx

If it does and you're worried about scheduling feeds for Angel, timed feeders are a godsend. As well as at night, sometimes when I think the fatigue will overtake me I load up Saoirse's feeders during the day to ensure she gets her meals in the event that I pass out. I do get caught out by the exhaustion at times, and that's when my poor little one ended up going too long between meals.  )

Rooting for you both in the Shire!

he was 6.8 this morning, the little love!!

Der-Brain here opened the Bozzita food instead of the Smilla, still only 4% carbs so still lowere than Purina. The 11 shot limit is going to give him a real chance to see how he does over the next couple of days. I don't think he's been sick either. However the Stinky Kittens (I had honestly forgotten how rank kitten poo smells) disgraced themselves. I came back with a load of shopping including a lovely pad of 180 scrapbook papers for a really good price. I went to make a cup of tea, then reached in my shopping back to look at my bargain papers...my SOGGY bargain papers. I did see Romeo leaping on the bag when I first got in, but Shakira has previous form for weeing in/on bags (so far 1 handbag, 2 shopping bags). And of course they are both looking at me like 'it wasn't ME, mummy'. Well it wasn't Angel and it definitely wasn't me!!!

If the smell doesn't go I will have to make a Smellyvision scrapbook about the Stinky Kittens' toilet habits!!

Haven't really followed this thread, Cassandra (I'm not one of the tecchy types here) but just catching up and glad to see you haven't lost your sense of humour ;-)
Rooting for you and Angel...

8.8/just under 160 this morning, grr. But going to speak to Ruth as testing him in the morning since I've stopped them grazing at night may be extra stressful for him.
All 3 are hungry, I have the kittens leaping on his rice sock, I'm going to try testing him on his own in future. xx

Hi Cassandra,

Is there any correlation between the start of the new feeding routine and the upward trend in Angel's numbers?

hi Aine,

yes, I'm really beginning to think the stress of being hungry is making him higher. 2 hours after eating yesterday he was 6.7!! He was 8.5 this morning, slightly better than yesterday morning. I'd separated him from the kittens and got him quiet. I'm going to test him again as it's nearly 2 hours since he last ate. Ruth and I both agreed you would expect him to be lower 8 hours after food than 2 hours after food but this isn't happening. If it is just stress that's great news because it's really a false reading.

I'm tempted to keep cans of food upstairs so if I get up in the night I can feed them in my room, see what happens then. He's due to go back to the rvc next week, should have been this week coming but my friend is on lates and can't get a lift there. He'll be constantly monitored there so that will be interesting!

Stinky Kittens have fleas again, Angel doesn't as he's still protected by Advocate. Being as he's the only one who goes outside there must have been some eggs left over somewhere. They get their boosters on Monday, I'm hoping they're big enough to have frontline as with the other stuff I have to stop them washing each other for 2 hours, nightmare as Angel loves to wash them. Shakira had the runs the other day so really lived up to the name Stinky Shakira. However the wet shopping bag is a mystery, there is no smell so I don't think it's cat wee, how it got wet is a mystery. I'm planning on getting leashes for them and walking them around the garden to get them used to it, before they get chipped and neutered.

xx

If the kittens are at least 4 weeks old, you can give Capstar to them to knock out the adult fleas. It lasts only 24 hours, so it is a start on the flea issue, but not the whole process.

ah, thanks Aine.

According to that, he was never out remission, only had one reading above 160 in the last almost 5 weeks, and that is when I was definitely overfeeding him!! Haven't had chance to test him today, I overslept and thought he was bound to be above 7.1 through being hungry, meant to test him 2 hours after food and fell back asleep on sofa watching formula 1. (how come I can't get off to sleep at night with earplugs and sleeping mask but I can sleep during the day, aaargh), So looking for a clear 2 hours between feeds.

Thanks BJM, I will talk to the vet, I read somewhere that capstar is toxic and can damage the liver, but I guess that's just if you use it regularly.

Same here. I've managed to work out that because of the PTSD my brain doesn't like it when my eyes are closed. I have to have some TV programme on as well or my brain goes into overdrive with negative thoughts. 99% of the time I pass out sitting up. One time a few years ago I passed out sitting in front of the computer and I woke with a start a few hours later with a half-eaten Mars Bar stuck to the side of my head ...
