Very cautious partying here!!!

So proud of lovely Angel, tonight's reading was 6.6/just under 120. He's had a stressful day too, vet visit and fructosamine test, and then for some reason deciding he doesn't want to climb the fence tonight and can't get out of my friend's garden. (I got him to climb on her grandson's old toy car and lifted him over). I know most vets like to give it a month before they are officially in remission so still keeping my fingers crossed, but GO ANGEL!!!

And...he's lost more weight, down to 4.7 kilos/10.36 lbs, his ideal weight. His fur and skin are in wonderful condition too.

So LOTS of cuddles for Angel (nothing new there though!) Would never have done this without this board.

Day 14, Angel! Woot!!!!! :thumbup

Great to hear about how well he is in himself in addition to how well his numbers are looking. :-D

Woohoo! Great news!
Here in 'FDMB World' 14 days in normal numbers means a kitty is considered in remission. So, on that basis...
Congratulations, Cassandra and Angel!!!!

Aaaah, thank you everyone.

Angel celebrated by getting into the kittens food AGAIN behind my back and testing at 7.2/130!! Still, as I know he's diet controlled only I knew it was only the food that gave him the higher reading and I know most people here wouldn't shoot at 130 on an alphatrak. So still no jab for Angel, but loads of cuddles and some gourmet pate which is even lower carbs than the purina diabetic and which he prefers. He's outside getting some peace and quiet from his tiny brother and sister who want his diabetic food instead of their kitten food.

If I hadn't found this board, Angel would probably still be on caninsulin, in danger of hypos and on Hills dry so you may well have saved his life. xxx

party_cat Congratulations, you two! :RAHCAT

You can also feed the kittens low carb food and then it won't matter if Angel gets in it. ;-)

the kittens are only 10 weeks old and Shakira is small for her age, I've been advised to give them kitten food.

I give them a mixture, usually overnight I will leave low carb out. Angel got into their food again last night, even worse it was the Hill's kitten food which I will not be getting any more of. Luckily I only got one pack, the kittens don't like it at all and Angel only got a tiny bit and tested at 7.5 (135), grrr! However last night he was his lowest ever at 4.8/just over 95!! He hasn't had his morning test as he's been outside MIA and now I've mislaid the glucometer, I'll find it soon as I know which room it's in, and if not I'll use the codefree!

Anyway, better find that glucometer as my boy is hungry.

4.8!!! Way to go, Angel! :-D

Low carb kitten foods:

Granatapet Kitten Chicken from the Happy Kitty Company is very low carb (<5%).

If you want to build Shakira up, you could possibly try supplementing her feeds with Liquivite. It's a soup consistency. It is almost 1 to 1 fat to protein but it is low carb (<5%) and it's recommended for weaning kittens or convalescent cats. Saoirse has done very well on it and it helped her to regain the weight she lost. It's available direct from Liquivite.co.uk

Bozita Kitten Tetrapaks (zooplus) are relatively low carb (<10%).

I wouldn't recommend Lily's Kitchen Kitten Dinner. It's low carb, but it triggered a pancreatitis flare in Saoirse, and it upset my civvie Lúnasa's tum as well. I think it's too rich.

Hope that helps, Cassandra.

thanks, Angel just tested 4.1 but on the codefree as the alphatrak wasn't where I thought it was!!!

Shakira seems really healthy (fingers crossed), my girl cats have always tended to be on the small side but enough feistiness to make up for that. She's definitely eating enough, if Romeo tries to share the food bowl she growls at him and he backs off!! I've just tried to add up the contents of Smila kitten food but get over 100%, oh well. I've got a ton of it to use up.
