Is there a guide somewhere about how much lovely low carb food to feed our cats? Part of the vets initial advice included how much food to give Sammy (of course I long since have stopped listening to everything else that stupid vet said). Sammy is on FF Turkey and Giblets which is incredibly low carb, and she is doing well, and now I am interested in allowing her to safely gain a little of the weight she lost before diagnosis. She has a little meat or fat on her bones at the moment, but it still breaks my heart to pet her bony frame.

She was just over 8 pounds at diagnosis. I will buy a scale soon and see what she is now.

On the other hand, my fat boy Sylvester (Sylly) is doing great on the same food! He is slowly losing some of his "beached seal" looks, and getting downright svelte! I say he is on a "Cat-kins diet!"

A good "ballpark" number is 15-20 calories, per pound, per day. A diabetic generally needs more rather than less, if their numbers are out of control. The more regulated they become, the less they would need because they will process the food more efficiently. Activity level matters too. The more active, the more calories they'll burn, just like people.

Right now, Polly is just under eight pounds, and pretty active. And not a diabetic. So I am trying for 150 calories a day to see if that keeps her weight the same. I'll adjust if needed after a couple of weeks.

Dr. Lisa's chart shows the # of calories per can for all the brands and flavors.

With the 15 I'm feeding, all low carb Friskies pate, it seems to work out to about 1 ounce per pound weight, divided into 2 feedings.
